New rat, 35 yards, in one front shoulder, out the other -- I am not used to tough wiry tree rats dropping at the shot with a .177 but durned if the first two of them didn't do just that ....
I have shot rats plumb through the head with my previous .177 air gun and had them hold on to the tree and still try to keep moving a short distance before falling off -- with my old pump Crosman .22 they always had to be shot several times in the body to do the job (never got head shots with it as it had no scope to it).
Tree rats are incredibly tough critters, when I was young I shot one twice with that .22 Crosman and then chased him off the edge of a 40 foot road cut cliff and he hit the hard road surface already in gear and jest a getting it for the bushes on the other side. Took 2 more to get him to stop finally.
We shall see, but so far the Ruger Air Magnum is a very economical one fer one on them bushy tailed shed and attic destroyers ...

Just this weekend I looked up and saw a diseased limb on my main oak tree, a goddarn squirrel ripped open the bark and started what looks like oak wilt (very common in Austin, kills many trees) So I got up there and sawed off the limb and prune-painted it.. hopefully saved the tree. I need to thin out the lil rodents again, but it is kind of difficult when you have kids watching the squirrels and going AWWww look at the squirrels burying acorns for the winter!

Only one thing more fun that pruning tree rats is impact exploding fat waddling possums ....
They reminds my bike of little bitty waddling baby Hurleys, so naturally it tracks right on over to get 'em.
Whut's that buzz sound coming round the corner? Let's go look ....

They have sold out the first shipment and are working on the second shipment now.
I would expect you need to act today/tomorrow or this deal will be long gone.

We had a squirrel problem in my neighborhood in Warner Robins. I had a cedarsiding house, so I had huge problems. My technique was a .22 air rifle with a real riflescope on it. It worked fairly well.
A neighbor had a longer-term technique. He would poison the pine cones and acorns. It apparently worked to some degree, because I would occasionally find dead squirrels on my property.
A neighbor in Alaska had a cat problem. He would put out bowls of antifreeze.
Awwwwwww,....

Oh jeez if I poisoned the squirrels around here, one of them would probably go limping in front of a neighbor who'd take it to the vet
Then the Bad Bad Man with Guns would get a visit from the SPCA.
And my cat is too fat old and lazy to do anything.. squirrels get 5 feet away and shake their tail just to mess with him.
That leaves one alternative.. clean, humane headshots.

Boule, did'ja see the 1.5" diameter 5 inch deep conical wound channel those .22 Crosman Premier Hollowpoints put into ballistic putty?
A squirrely purley ain't but about 4 inches deep crosswise ....
A wise old airgunner once said that popping a squirrel with a .177 was akin to you getting popped with a .69" minnie ball from a musket.
Popping a squirrel with a .22 was akin to you catching a round cannister shot from a field piece.
What is amazing is that squirrels will run off carrying that kind of damage if shot placement is bad.

Around here ifa squirrel catches one of those, you don't have to worry about clean up... coyotes will be by soon enough.
They might even tip their hat to you.

Yep that's pretty impressive. I haven't delved into hollowpoint pellets yet. I had a .22LR target rifle that did all right with target ammo but the hollowpoints would always "fly" on me.
Must.. not.. buy.. Crosman Titan Nitro...

My Crosman .22 eight pump open sight pellet rifle cost me $32 back when I was of lawn mowing age.
Run it forward into today's money that was a $230 air rifle back then and it was the very nicest pellet gun you could buy at the time, period.
Now, let's take that $89 for the nitrogen ram equipped .22 Titan today and run it backwards into 1963 dollars ....
$12.84
And Boule, the 950 fps (get an honest 800 fps w/heavy pellets) Titan .22 comes with a
free scope
....
Heck fire, scopes cost way more than $12.84 back in 1963 all by themselves.
Heck fire, I can seeeeee I can seeeeeee again, and my cross-hairs are on you, you tree wrecking squirrely purley !!
phutt !!! <splat>

..... the turrible turrible temptation has ended .....
(sob !!!)
the $89 gas ram .22 caliber 950 fps Titan has sold out completely.
Now you just have to put up with Verslagen and me talking about how neat ours are once they get here.
And mine will be here on Thursday !!!
