They start training around 5 years old, and she has what is known as hyperflexed or hyperextended joints. Ballet dancers are often the same way.
Actually, being this hyperflexible can be a big issue in training - the tendency to over-stretch breaks down tissues and wears on the joints causing early arthritis and muscle pain issues.

You won't see a 30 year old doing this type of ballet or gymnastics for that very reason - by the time you get to that age, things have broken down too much to continue. Tongue

I did gymnastics up until I was about 14 years old. Its hard work! But fun too. That was before the balls, hoops and ribbons became very popular. Remember Mary Lou Retton? She's from WV, not far from me, but a bit younger than me. I saw her perform when she was maybe 8. Awesome. They do start them early, a gymnast is washed up before 20 usually. Hey our bodies change, what can we say? lol I don't care as much for the "rhythmic gymnastics", but this little girl with the ball is pretty amazing.

Yea, the Rhythmic thing is just land based synchronized swimming to me,, Im not into it. I like a good floor routine, uneven parallels, balance beam, & I like to see the high bar, rings & floors the guys do, I hung out with the gym team in college, Gymnasts are unlike any other "jocks",, its rare to meet a snooty one,
& the most amazing thing about gymnasts? They generally cant wrestle for crap!

Just doesn't seem possible. Of course neither does some of the fancy flexin'!
