Reno Air Race crash killed a friend...
09/17/11 at 17:01:26
This morning I got a call from my mother that a very close friend ( I've known his kids almost as long as he has type of close) was on life support. Until his sons can fly down from Seattle to say goodbye. Jim is brain dead. At least he got to see his first grandchild this spring.
I love WW2 fighters as much as the next guy but it might be time to start retiring some airframes.
If you believe in it, send some prayers his family's way. His father and his wife's mother both died last year. My parents are the kids' surrogate grandparents.

Please accept my deepest sympathies WD my friend. Have seen the video of that horrible crash online ... terrible. Like you, I love WW2 era aircraft as well ... and agree, that maybe it's time to retire some from the show circuit ...

Condolences to you and the family WD.
I saw the pics from that crash and thought the same as some others who have posted - even newer planes have structure fatigue that causes failures. The crews and pilot go over everything every time they fly, but so much can be missed when it comes to worn parts.
In this case it took the lives of more than just the pilot.

In humility I add my prayers. Know that this is a change, not an ending.

My condolences as well.
"I love WW2 fighters as much as the next guy but it might be time to start retiring some airframes."
I read an article years back that when they retired some of the the F86's they cut the wing spars so they could not be flown again. Some managed to find there way into private hands and crashed. Big stink about the unscrupulous resellers.
The local airshow banned WWII fighters from the flight portion of the show for liability reasons.
