A fellow student back in the 1960's had setup that filtered used oil. He made up a box that would squeeze a standard roll of toilet paper flat. Oil went in one side and out the other. It was all gravity fed, so the "processing" went very slowly (days per quart).
He would heat up the oil in a pot first to boil off any acids/moisture/liquid impurities, according to him. After it cooled, he'd put it in a bottle that drained into the toilet paper container, that drained into empty glass bottles (they didn't use plastic bottles back then).
His "reclaimed" oil did look clear and clean. We discussed things like additive packages not there anymore, other clear but undesirable liquid stuff that might still be in there, viscosity index change, etc., but we were all poverty stricken at the time. All that mattered to him was that he could save a few bucks a month (maybe) on oil.
