Plate vibrates off
10/11/11 at 14:00:25
I am sure this has been posted before, but I can't seem to find a good solution.
darn thing cracks and then falls off.
Is a bracket the way to go?
Thanks in advance.

Most folks cut a piece of aluminum the same size and put it behind the plate to reinforce it. This makes it harder for the wind to push on it and tear the plate.

Some people put a frame around it, that is what I did. Others put a plate behind it, maybe someone used some kind of rubber washers on the plate. I have not had a problem, but I put a frame on fairly soon after i got the bike.

Yep all that, and go by the hardware store, pick-up several soft rubber(or similar synthetic material) the right size for the bolts, use to isolate from the frame. Works great.

But you lose the performance boost you get from the plate flapping like a paddle out back.

I wonder if the plate vibration problem will show up on RYCA bikes? Since it is mounted completely differently, the vibration will be better or worse. I have heard about the epoxied joint where the plate mount bracket joins the fiberglass tailpiece letting go, though. Hopefully not as much of a problem,.. eh?

The CS-1 prototype had a side mounted plate. Months ago I asked about it and was told they're thinking of mass producing it eventually. The CAD drawing is sitting on their computer. It's not on their online store yet, so maybe a few more people need to ask about it.

I think I'll mount mine with layers of rubber or grommets or RTV or some such to try and lead turn this situation.

I bought one of these :

They work great, come in different colors, and double as an inspection plate.

And for us Ryca guys, it serves as an extra bit of fender.

not a permanent solution by any means, but a stopgap is to put strips of duct tape on the back of the plate making it harder for it to separate and "frame" the plate with duct tape so it makes it harder for cracks to start.
I did that for about a year before I took an aluminum backplate and sandwiched the license plate between that and a frame to hold together a few pieces that had cracked off.
I had just a frame by itself for all of a month before that plastic POS cracked too....

You can a license plate frame at any harley davidson store that's plain chrome and mounts over top of your license plate with 4 bolts, for $9 I believe. I have one and it works perfect.
