Easy way to remove Fork Guards?
10/17/11 at 11:52:02
I just got a SuperBrace and it doesn't explain how to remove the original fork guards. Before I go cuttin stuff up, I'd like to know if there's an easy way to remove them and keep them intact in case I need them later. The SuperBrace guy told me to cut em off with a bone saw..

How many miles are on the front fork seals?

Kimchris1 did a tech thread on how to cut them off with a utility knife without scratching the fork legs.
If you want to salvage the guards, use a small piece of wood as a punch. Tap upward on them and work your way around.. they will come up and off in one piece.

Screw it.. I don't have a stand to even take the front wheel off.. bone saw it is... unless there's a way to pop the guards up over the seal and onto the thinner part of the fork then cut with plastic clippers... hmm

I remember seeing that thread, but couldn't find it in the tech section, could ya point me to it if you have it handy?

Once again I'm searching for "fork guard" in the tech section and it's under "fork protectors" and not under the front suspension category.. lol
Thanks for the link!

Get a piece of wood (6" hunk of 2x4 will work fine) and a hammer. Use 2x4 & hammer to tap raised section of guard sideways or radially or whatever that is to loosen it. Then, working front & back, front & back, use 2x4 & hammer to push guard UP until it's entirely off the lower. Then you can cut it off with a pair of household Fiskar scissors or whatever. No lifting, no scratching, no cursing. And yer gonna love the brace.

So many ways... I think I might try using my rubber mallet instead of a piece of wood and tap that with a steel hammer.. if that doesn't work I'm just gonna try the exacto knife method, I'm better with a blade then a hammer..

Be careful w/ the X-acto, I pushed too hard once & broke a blade, the resulting Free Motion when the blade broke raked my thumb across the part that was sticking out of what I was cutting.. 4 stitches later I was headed home,.
