Sounds like a dumb question, but I have an old Suzuki dirt bike that I bought new and the engine & frame numbers are different.

I got a 71 honda and the numbers are close but don't match.

The other would then be matched to another so the numbers shouldn't be off by much.

Old Harleys match. Triumphs match. Yamahas don't match. None of my Savages match.

They are sold that way all over, including NY.
Go to any suzuki dealer and check it out, none of them match.
The engine number could also be on the registration.

In N.Y. all are registered by the VIN number ,and if someone told you it was illegal he's wrong ! (and he was probably a Harley guy).
In FLA. back in the 70's bikes were registered by engine number ,someone stealing your bike (usually for the motor) would have to rebuild his totally ,needing to keep his center cases which helped deter thievery.
