I saw this big old make or break motor at the Volusia County Fair. It puts out 87 hp. Too bad it wasn't running

i was wondering - usually those huge old engines have surprisingly (to me) low hp

I'll bet it is 8.7 hp too. They had huge torque though, and ran at really low rpm. I'll bet it made 100 lb-ft of torque at 900 rpm.
