Head cover installation tips?
06/09/12 at 16:31:33
I'm about to put a new plug cap in and stop a leaky head cover.
Ive gathered that some RTV black is the stuff to use to make a gasket.
Ive rehearsed the method for reinstalling the head cover, kind a twisty turn maneuver.
My question is, If I apply the RTV to the head cover will the rtv get all over the cam chain and sprocket when installing?
Or would it be better to apply RTV to the head instead?
Any tips from experience would be awesome.
Thanks

I did it to the head... less wiggle jiggle, less chance of gooping all over...
...
PS... keep track of where each bolt goes... but, if you get mixed up,.. pop them in to all the holes before install,... and if you have them right, they'll all be sticking out the bottom about the same length...
PSS... one of the bolts (can't remember exactly) near TDC of cover, needs to be inserted in the cover before you put it in the frame... assuming you're doing this while the engine is in frame...

LOCATE every Bolt,,be sure youve found them all, if you try to pop that thing off "after" youve pulled them all & it doesnt want to come off,, Youre not done removing bolts,Dont fight it, its not stuck.
Draw on cardboard the bolt pattern, X-slot where each bolt goes. P{ut them in their place as the come ouot. Pay Extra close attention at the bolt on the left side, nearest the front. Its upside down.,Look at where it sits in the head. One bolt near center will not come out IN the frame, be sure its IN the head cover before you set it back in,

Go to tech section and print out bolt pattern, glue it to a box and use it. One bolt HAS to be in cap BEFORE you install it. I used Yamabond 4 for the head to cap seal on recommendation of Suzuki shop, but others use Suzuki goop with good results. One of the valve rocker shafts can slide over in the head cap and cause a bolt to not go back in the cap. Be sure the valve rocker arm shaft are all the way into their bores. Study tech section well before starting and keep it clean. Not a hard job. Just go slow and take photos if you can't finish in one sitting or can't remember where things go.

thanks for the replies,
Ive got the bolts in the pattern from the tech section.
Does it have to be suzuki goop? or will black or red RTV work?
And when applying do you run a bead? or smear a thin layer?
How did you guys clean off the old goop?, mines on there pretty good!

you don't want hard stuff, that's why it's so hard to clean up.
to want RTV 500° or higher
i usually just scrape it off with a wood chisel cause it offers more control of the sharp edge.
but a dremel with a nylon brush works
or strippers will take it off chemically.
