When I was away in beautiful southeast Asia in 1971 courtesy of the US Army, my brother who was caring for the bike while I was away, took it to a shop to get it set up for battery & lights & such and it was while at that shop that the parts disappeared. When I got home and went to pick up the bike I found that the shop had changed hands and the new owner did not even know who owned the bike, much less what had happened to the parts. so I just loaded it right then and took it home and looked for replacements. I found the seat and tank at a little country shop in central Oklahoma that I just happened to stop at one day, and it turned out the old dude there could make pipes & mufflers as well so I had him do that too. It made it functional at least.

No, not a Matchless.
It was a '56 BSA Goldstar that had raced on 1/2 & 1 mile flat tracks. I paid $800 for it in the summer of 1969 in Olathe KS.
The guy I bought it from had stopped racing, so he rebuilt the engine just like he had it to race and put it in a little local shop on consignment.
It was sitting next to a beautiful fresh Indian flat head v-twin chopper.

The engine was in the 11.5:1 CR range; had the most radical of 4 camshaft profiles offered by BSA for PRO racing; 1 1/2" Amal Grand Prix carb with 6" velocity stack; 1 3/4" header with open reverse cone megaphone; std. 4 spd. trans and geared to hit redline at about 110 mph.
Torque from 2500-3000 rpm to redline was massive & it pulled HARD all the way. The standard redline was 6500 rpm but some were capable of going near 8000 rpm with a very fine tune.
It was crazy quick when taking off the line; just holding on to the grips was a real challenge.
Back in those days the BSA factory would hand build & blue print Goldstar engines for professional racers and when the bike left the factory it came with the dyno report for that engine, which typically was in the 45-55 hp at the rear wheel, depending on the engine setup they used for flat track or scrambler or road racing. These bikes were about 300 lbs.
Then the racer/builder/tuner would tweak the engine for their specific riding pleasure.
That was what the privateer racers did in those days.

I sold it in the early 90's during hard times to make a house payment.
It would be worth $20-25k today. Sad

Yep, at the time it was a necessary thing to do, but it sure was difficult and sad. Now I just really miss not having it. It was such a unique machine.

I wish I had done the same a looong time ago.
Doing it purposefully makes it more fun than if doing so due to difficulty.
