Carb Screw - Which Direction?

I read on here to prevent backfiring on the Suzuki Savage, you should remove the copper plug to get access to the carb mixture screw and adjust that accordingly.

I was able to do that with no problems and have adjusted the screw to where my motorcycle runs fine in really hot and dry weather but now that it's getting a little colder, which way do I turn the screw?

I am asking which way to turn the screw when it's hot, humid weather and which way for a little colder weather?

Yeah, I have no clue! LOL!

Glad you saved me the trouble of looking this up, but I'm still confused. I finally got to ride to work today. I'm popping alot more than I used to. Going to work was about 70 degrees, coming home was around 95 degrees. Popped a little less coming home. Its very humid here. Since Since it popped more when it was cooler and less humid, I thought I should go richer, but then it still popped alot when it was hot and humid.

Help? Huh

I've also felt a little surging/gasping occasionally but its so inconsistent, I can't pin it to anything yet. I'll go check those bolts.

I did the oil change on mine tonight(Rotella 15-40 dino,by the way) and noticed one of the header bolts was a little loose. I've had a bit more popping lately and when I did my "after oil change" shakedown run things were much quieter Cool

Just proves that it pays to take out the wrenches and check all the nutz and boltz on a regular basis. What do the pros call that...???.....oh yeah! Preventitive Maintenence Wink

So, this morning I rode my 1998 Savage to work and it was VERY foggy out and whenever I stopped...my poor motorcycle died. Sad

I thought I had it running pretty good when I was a little colder in the morning and hotter on the way home but now with the fog...nope!

It there any way to fix it so it just runs good without having to fiddle with the carb screw or am I SOL?

I've got it where it doesn't backfire at all where it is now too.

I cringe whenever these threads come up about messing w/ carbs for the sole purpose of trying to stop backfire, mainly because it usually ends up w/ little to gain, and a lot to loose when you start hackin the carb !
Just learn to control the backfire w/ the throttle, its easy !
About the time you think you stopped it, it will be back under different conditions. These bike are known for the backfire,.....it means they are running as they are designed to run.

All this IMO only !

@ Routy...all opinions are welcome to me!

The backfiring I know is normal for this type of motorcycle but it was pretty darn loud though, even when I was trying to control it. So, I figured I'd give it a shot and got it working with no backfiring and just this little issue. It's really cause where I live in Ohio, the weather has been CRAZY! We really had no winter....maybe 2-days of light snow and it's been SUPER DRY this summer!

I'll figure it out but it you know the carb screw turns to get it to the factory settings...I'll try it and see what happens. Wink

So, I'll adjust the idling and see how it works. Thanks again all for such FAST and GREAT suggestions! You guys ROCK!

Reply #13 - 08/15/12 at 10:16:48 If it boofs & growls, thats okay, if it goes off like a gun, you may have a leaky exhaust. If the idle is low, pops or no pops, get the idle up. The cost of a low idle speed is way serious.

My brass plug is still intact and I can make mine bang like a gun pretty much on demand but I've learned to control it. I've checked all of the exhaust bolts and they're nice and tight.

You may want to change gasoline brands. The amount of bang seems to depend greatly on brands. For example, Marathon makes mine pop more than Super America does.
