Riding as pain therapy.

George, Serowbot, and I rode up the Lemon this morning. Physically, I was having a pretty rough day. But I noticed that as I rode, things got a little better, maybe even more than a little better. That got me thinking. As someone who lives with, among other things, spinal arthritis, I often go riding when I am in pain.

I was wondering if there are any others on the site who ride as a sort of pain therapy?

Four days after a discectomy I was riding Lisa's Intruder around our old condo parking lot. I can't go very far in a car anymore (driver or passenger) but can ride most of the day on a properly fitting bike. Knocks some of the knots out, gets things realigned.

Reply #2 - 08/03/12 at 17:48:55 I don't know what it is- the seating position, or the constant vibration, but my back and hips can be killing me and I get on the bike and 15 min later I am nearly, or sometimes completely, pain free. I have arthritis in my lower back , hips, one elbow, and three fingers.

I also haven't been riding as much lately because it's just been way to hot, to work on the bike to figure out the weird issue of the gremlins in my starter circuit. R.F.

For joints and pain nothing works better that swimming (Oh yeah, and dump the refined flours and sugars!)

For me it's mostly mental therapy. I used to meditate daily and riding gives me that same feeling because I can let my mind go (luckily, it comes back - LOL)

My physical problems are most arthritic and tendonitis, and altho the disease can manifest itself anywhere, it often is in my hands and wrists. In fact, I haven't ridden for the past month because my right hand can't close. It has been coming more often and worse in the past few years, so if it gets too bad I'll have to quit riding altogether.

Reply #8 - 08/04/12 at 14:47:29 I find riding to be fully physical and psychological, generally improving all aspects. I think about all sorts of stuff and pray often. It's a good time for that sort of thing. And yes, it's pretty good for body aches/pains.
