Bikes, cars, trucks, boats, trains, ships, etc... Actually in most other romance languages, objects have gender anyway; including tables, chairs, paper, computers, trees, etc. I think the feminine substitution in American english, however, stems more from the redneckian hillwilliam vernacular.

I don't know any real bike or car men that call them her/she/etc. The only men(boys) that call them that are the ones that are trying to come off as real gear heads. They're the first ones to sell their rides when the trends change. Real gear heads call them "it" and they're also the ones that would prefer to be around "it" than around a real human being.

As far as ships are concerned - that's more tradition than anything else. Ships are always called "she" even when they're labeled with men's names.

I don't know anything about this, but I think i remember reading in "the hunt for red october" that the russians call their ships and boats "he" instead of "she"
