Posts: 173	suzuki dl650 vstrom 01/11/13 at 17:17:43 seriously thinking about replacing the savage with a suzuki dl650 vstrom i have a 1 1/2 miles of dirt before i get to paving. lots of great roads that are gravel up here. any body have one? know about them?

Handles nice, not too heavy for what it is, and is comfortable. My bro is on his second DL 1000. I've ridden both of them a lot and it is BIG. I'd be afraid to take it in the dirt as it's tall, the 650 is a different story, but that's just me

Ditto what V said... it's a rock solid ride,... but too tall fer' me...
I'm actually better in the gravel and slippy stuff on my Savage... (I do have 12" shocks)...

I'm only 5'-8"... if you're 6' plus,... the VStrom will be a great bike...
You will have more weight, height, and the added complication of water cooling and whatnot to deal with... ... but, the bike has a sterling reputation...
If you are tall enough,... it probably allows for stand-up powering though deep gravel... (I'd hate to do that with such a pretty bike)...
Another favorite of mine, although it's recently out of production, is a Yamaha XT350... it'll top out at 90+mph and do way better in the dirt than a V-Strom...
Suzuki Dr350's are great, too... but, too tall again...
Yama XT350 is a reasonable height for street riding and dirt...

Serow is spot on too. The Stroms are tall. I'm 6' and the 1000 is way too much to inspire any offroad confidence on my part. Any dualsport will be taller but the ones he mentioned are great alternatives. Like I always tell folks...do some research and saddle 'em up before you pull the trigger on one. I prefer simpler old school air cooled motors myself. At 50 I'm liking the lighter weights too and the need to ride like my hair is on fire has greatly subsided so the middle weights are where I'm at now. I still take the 900ss out for an occasional blast though. Wink

thanks guys. i'm 6' 2" and the savage is to low and small for me. i don't need anything bigger than a 650-750cc. there are lots of opportunity to ride gravel roads in north west colorado. and if i want to ride to denver i want to be comfortable doing it. look at the bike i'm looking at go to craiglist colo. denver motorcycles. type in suzuki dl650vstrom look at the one in littleton for 5895.00 let me knoe what you think. cowboy Cheesy

KTM makes some wicked bikes too...

I'm looking also Cowboy. Thinking about the WeeStrom, Versys, Bonneville and my latest fantasy is the new Honda CB1100 due out in March.

I sat on the new Honda 700, it was the automatic version, felt really, really heavy. It's actually not as cool in person as it is in the magazines. I'd check in out close before buying. Can't see any reason to get the auto trans or even ABS in a bike that's listed as 'Adventure' if you can't turn the ABS off... There's a reason why James Stewart doesn't have ABS on his motorcrosser.....

the new CB1100 is tops on my list right now, but would rather it be out for a year and buy a used one than brand new. it is pretty darn cool looking, I'll say that.

AND warm, dry roads post pics tomorrow.

Posts: 173	vstrom Reply #14 - 01/27/13 at 09:27:06 I got it done bought a 06 vstrom dl650. wow is this bike nice. very fast, smooth. givi bags. it was a rush to ride on on sat. for the first time. set up pretty nice. i,ll add lower guards center stand hand guards.
