From what little we've seen on Pope Francis so far, non-Catholics and even non-believers have to like this man. Today, before he gave the traditional Sunday greeting from the balcony outside of his study to the throng in St. Peter's Square, he went to a side gate in the Vatican and went out into the street to shake hands and meet the people one on one. Nice gesture, I think.
At the end of his more formal remarks from the balcony, he told the crowd to "have a nice lunch", in Italian of course. The news article said that Sunday lunch with family is a big deal - it's a traditional family time in Italy.

I went to a Jesuit high school, and the Jesuits there made no bones about the Vatican not trusting/liking the order... Should be interesting, a Pope from the military arm of the church.
