I would like to get a little more out of the top end if possible Mine comfortably cruises at 75 and will go just above 80. Is their much I can do without doing a pretty significant overhaul? Weight reduction, Dyna muffler, properly rejet the carb. You can get hot cam kits, oversized bore kits, etc.

The faster you go, the worse the bike gets. Just an FYI.

The frame, brakes and suspension are designed for cruising or sustained operation under 65mph. Put bluntly, they suck. The bike is 1960s engineering with mid 1970s ignition components.

Not trying to dash your hopes, but as a performance platform, the Savage is a snail.

Reply #4 - 03/25/13 at 14:00:19 The bike doesn't feel all that comfortable to me when it approaches its' top speed. It is a thumper, great torque and acceleration around town. I honestly wouldn't want to go any faster on it which is why I now have a more suitable bike for those times when I want to go out and run at higher speeds for any length of time.

Ive seen 100 on it, ONCE, more often than not, 85ish is about it,,

I never was able to really trust it. Thankfully, it was toast at 5,000 miles. I did learn to work the bike the corners in low traction situations, cuz it always felt greasy. After that tire, the peg ends started getting reshaped.

Unlike some of the others,I'M comfortable at Interstate speeds(70-75mph) on my Savage. I have the Memphis "Slim" windshield and larger saddlebags and the bike feels stable at those speeds,even when passing 18 wheelers. The tires are getting worn to below 1/4 tread now and the rear does feel "greasy" in hard turns so I'm ordering tires soon(have to be ready to follow OF and MMRanch up the mountains Shocked

in June).

Reply #10 - 03/26/13 at 22:20:56 I have the route 66 tires on mine and the Slip Streamer Enterprise II big windshield and mine feels completely stable at 75 on the super slab even around the big rigs. Only thing I don't like about it, is the high revs. I really need to get that chain conversion done to get those revs down to a respectable level. R.F.

I'm not uncomfortable at speed on mine. On the old forum (LS650 dot net) I had the fastest one in the world for awhile. Stripped it of everything I could pull off and still make it go and stop. Even had lightweight alloy strut bars instead of shocks. The engine got so hot I'm honestly surprised it ever ran again, it should have grenaded.

The frame is a big limiting factor, it lacks the high speed stiffness needed to keep it from twisting itself out of kilter and "unloading" at the worst possible time.

If you want the hottest thumber this side of kingdom come, becareful, the cross over is rough.
