Clutch throw adjustment
08/26/14 at 08:29:53
Hey guys,
After my clutch cable frayed, I replaced it. I don't recall what the clutch throw and engagement behavior was like prior since I never payed attention to it until it needed it.
For now, I can feel very slight friction at around 1/3-1/2 throw. Once the clutch lever is released, the clutch is fully engaged and I haven't noticed any slipping. In other words, it works fine.
I was wondering how I could improve it though. No matter how much I tinker, I either bring the friction point earlier in the throw, but then the clutch lever flaps around for the last 1/4 of throw left.
I've looked around on the forum, and have found guides on how to adjust the cable at both ends, and based on those, have it the way it is now, which is fine, but not ideal.
Any thoughts / comments? I thought maybe I could very slightly reduce the length of the (OEM) cable and add one of those brass barrels.. but I'm not about to start chopping cable any time soon..

did you lube the cable?
and what caused your cable to fray?
if I were you, I'd be looking for that before it ate up my new one.

I haven't lubed the cable (yet). The cable frayed right at the lever end, so my guess is that it was simply an old cable that needed replacing. Clutch operates smoothly as far as I can tell. Anything else I can/should look out for?

Ok. Sounds like I have it adjusted about right then. Sometimes I find forums make me worry more than I need to!

Edge of a nickle, cable play before the lever starts to pull...
We are so fortunate to have a clutch with a smooth even release...
