Yes, the engine needs to be at TDC. If you don't have the engine at TDC, the cam could be holding one of the valves open, and the valve spring can push on the cover and make it hard to remove - and impossible to put back on. You also will need to check the valve clearance after you have replaced the head plug, and this will require you to know where TDC is located.

I have researched it a bit more and yes I figured out why it needs to be at TDC. I'm not sure why I was confused I think I was thinking about a 2 stroke engine lol. I didn't tackle it because I am going to buy the Clymer's manual just to be safe. Cheers
