Putzing around in the garage for a few minutes tonight. Took a look at the license plate mount and might just go with it like this.

A license plate in that position won't comply with the laws in most states.  Unless you like playing "chicken" with the Law.....the plate shouldn't be hidden behind the tire.  The photo you listed is at an angle that shows the plate - but when you have the bike upright and your weight on the seat.....and the Officer is 20 feet behind the bike inside a Patrol Car......all the Officer is going to see is the top of the back tire and a bit of license plate on either side of the tire.

When I was deciding what to do with my plate, I went and talked to a few of the Police Officers at the small towns I work for.  The unanimous comment was the plate needed to be easily visible, it needed to be horizontal, and it needed to be lit. (Some states allow vertical plates).

I don't like the plate on the back of the seat/fender...it ruins the smooth lines and rubbing the tire can be a problem. I toyed with the idea of putting the plate up at the frame like you posted - but I just want to ride and not be fussin' with the Police on a continual basis.  I finally settled on a side mount as a way to help hide the weird shock offset that is required by the belt drive.

Dave, even yours would get me a $600 ticket here....We have no option but on the back of the bike, and even then the mudguard has to cover the wheel on a 45 deg line up from the axle. It sucks. Brand new bikes have these stupid looking fender extenders or swingarm mounted things, just for new bike rego. Then everyone 'loses' them. At least the number plate hanging down counts as part of the guard. How are the Sport Demons working out on the Cafe?
Jeff, yours is looing good.

Beautiful!! I was looking at the ryca bobber and was thinking about slowly buying pieces to customize my own. I know that ryca is mainly bolt ons but I was thinking about getting other parts but that involves welding and I'm a total noob when it comes to anything more than a wrench.

I was looking at the plate taped in that place in front of the tire and stood back from it; no visibility on it. The Illinois law says it has to be horizontal and not vertical. I'll just mount it stock for now and see how it clears at full suspension compression and tweak it from there. I can still make the plate pivot away from the tire if necessary.
Working on the battery box tomorrow. Need to do another nut and bolt run.
Thanks for the input gang!

Got the frame paint touched up and the battery box in. Working on the wiring tomorrow.

LOL. To me the hardest part was finding a place to stuff it all. Once I had that figured out it was fairly straight forward. I used solderless connectors as my soldering skills are less then acceptable.

From the great state of NJ:

License plate display
When you title and register a vehicle, you will receive two license plates – one for the front and one for the rear of the car. Trailers, motorized bicycles and motorcycles only receive one.

They must be clean and visible at all times. Even though the rear plate is reflectorized, it must be illuminated to make it visible from 50 feet away at night. If your license plate holders obscure or conceal any lettering on the license plate, you are subject to a fine.

Massachusetts:

The number plate must be undamaged, securely horizontally mounted on the rear of the
motorcycle, clean and clearly visible. No accessory mounted on the motorcycle may interfere
with a clear view of the number plate. Any decorative number plate or number plate replica
not issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles for the motorcycle being inspected on which
appears any jurisdictional name must be removed from the motorcycle.

Plate Light. Each motorcycle shall be equipped with a white light so arranged as to
illuminate the rear number plate so that it is plainly visible at a distance of 60 feet. Such light shall
not emit a tailing glare.

In Illinois:
"All riders must have "officer appreciation" money in their pockets at all times. Anything smaller than (10) $50 bills will not be considered. Without said monitaries, all drivers and riders will be booked on suspicion of drug dealing or assault against an officer. All video taken will be not admitted as evidence. You have no rights, the police are Gods and they know it."  Wink
