The bank can have the Sheriff show you out..
Owning
X
property costs less than renting, all things being equal.
The landlord pays taxes, and the mortgage and insurance
And wants to make a profit. If you're some kinda guru and can tell when prices are gonna drop, then maybe rent, then when it's cheap, buy..
Yeah, me neither...

When you get that property out of town.....you can join Planet Fitness and stop there on your way to/from work!

Where else can you get a nice clean bathroom and shower for $ 10 a month! Grin

Thanks Dave, I have a gym here that's MUCH better than PF (you can actually do useful lifting , use chalk, and even grunt with effort) so I got showering covered  Wink
does cost $20 a month, though

Thanks everyone, I'm going to Alvin today to look at a camper top for the truck, in case i do wind up camping for a while
I have contacted one realtor about a place I could buy (payments would be far below my current rent )
I am definitely thinking / hoping to become an owner, if it means buying a piece of land outside city limits (no zoning ordinances) and putting a portable with a porta potty, genset, and such on it
I don't need much to live, being single and 48 means I'm not trying to impress women, so I can just man style it
I will get through this, and hopefully I will come out ahead for it
as far as where to camp, I got a guy here who'll let me rent a bit of his out of town land to camp on for not much money

That's what I'm Tawkin About,,  rather see you own something than rent.
I remember learning to live without... took a WHILE.

May have this handled, mouth shut, fingers crossed

Sorry to hear this, Art.  I hope things work out for you.

I'm with the others owning is much better than renting and much harder to throw you out.

Thanks Steve

I'm buying a piece of land, with a travel trailer on it, from a guy I work with
We did the papers yesterday, and i made the first payment
I'm a little concerned that the 'contract' is hand written and not notarized, but I think he's honest
worst case, I 'rent' the place for a while
The trailer is a peice of crap, but I'm looking for a better one to stick on the land
I could also put a portable building on it, but a trailer I can take with me if things get hinkey
Meantime, I've bought a cap for my Ranger, and I'm gonna fit it out like a mini RV, I found some stuff online as to how to rig it out

Now I'll have a place all you rowdy Savages can camp coming through Texas hehehe

Ok, you've got your own piece of dirt, I hope the legalities work out ok. Whatever happens, if you can hang on to it, it may alter your whole perspective on life. I hope it's within reasonable distance of paid or self employment. Property ownership is a great stabiliser for the single, far better than most other elevators or most other corporate, think tank or university inspired ones.

Thanks, JC, 20 miles from my current place of employment, so no worries there
This is my secondnd foray into ownership, the first was ruined by my ex
We shall see re the legalities once I get it paid off, meantime, I'm not a nomad lol

indeed, JOG, and that's the only way I'll put a portable down
I could also buy a 16x8 or 16x10 and bolt it to a trailer right from go, and fit it how I want to
The portable I'm looking at is designed to be pulled, btw (storage shed)
Hell, I could buy a trailer and build a shell on it, though that would take more time
I could also knock down the extant trailer and build on it's frame, but it's too big for my truck to pull, and has no papers, so likely not that route
we'll see what we see

Keep whatever you are building below 200 square feet, and it most likely will not have to meet meet the Building Code requirements.  The Residential Code book that is almost universally adopted nationwide has an exemption for anything under 200 square feet.  (That is how all those small garden sheds sitting on blocks get away with not having a real foundation).

If the trailer that came with the property is all your's then go over it and see what is still workable. Most of the systems like heat, hot water and AC are modular. If you are off the grid something like a 6 gallon propane fired hot water heater would be an easy swap over into another building or camper. Some of the systems are set up for 12 volts so going solar power would be an option also. Just a thought.
Good luck with whatever you do. Wink

Art I believe your on a good plan with the "cottage" on a dual axle trailer.   Sounds like a plan that can work.   I've seen one somewhere  , I'll hunt for the picture.   Wink

http://www.lowes.com/pd_496841-54775-182938_1z0wg8d__?productId=50150476&pl=1

A person could build one of these for a lot less than the "Ready kit"  .   I put a home-made septic tank in once , hand dug it and made it out of thin concrete blocks , poured the lid on top the ground and drug it in place with my truck --- it was heavy --- be aware !  Roll Eyes   in hind sight I should  have put a sheet of plastic under my frame instead of just "on top the ground"  it would have broke loose and moved a lot easier ...  Embarrassed

A porch would double the living space , even if it was only a ramp type tail gate with  concrete blocks for steps and under the corners.   Huh

My brother and his hunting buddy have a pop-up camper they bring to my place in the winter ... its un-insulated and uses a 20# bottle of propane every two days.    Canvas and metal construction type.   but it has a stove ,sink , fridge , and cabinets .   It might be good to see how they are set up.   Also in the  "Boy Scout" world of things  there is a thing called an "Out-Doors kitchen" one piece unit (fold up for car camping) that has stove , counter space  and sink built in together .   Is it safe to burn propane camp stove indoors --- seems like it should be ?   I have "Blue Flame" heaters in my house .  Anyway all those propane devices will work on a 20# tank or the little blue ones , but the little ones are an expensive way to go !

sounds like a neat idea you have going , hope you can make it happen.
