Big Bore High Compression Piston/Cylinder Kit
The Big Bore Pistons come in 3 sizes; 95mm, 96mm & 97mm.
95mm: 667cc
96mm: 680cc
97mm: 695cc
The raised head on the piston raises the compression up about 2 points and the larger size of the piston itself adds about 1/2 point. These are billed as 10:1 compression pistons for the DR650. The LS650 has a smaller bore to start with (94mm vs 95mm for the DR) so I add in the additional 1/2 point for our extra size increase, making the total of 10.5:1 compression.
The cylinders are bored, honed, silicone carbide treated, blasted and painted by Bore Tech. Bill has been doing this for many years and is a true expert in his field. He backs up everything he does so if you have any questions or have an issue please let me know as soon as possible so we can get it taken care of.
I cannot access the photos of the cylinder right now but will add them when I can.
The price for the kit is
$575
with
your
cylinder used in the process.
I occasionally have a spare cylinder, and if that is needed then the cost will be more.

Hi there. I am new to this Forum so i am still trying to figure out how it works. I currently have a 1998 Savage. Rebuilding the engine and want to go big piston but ran into a problem; I can't find the right piston for the bike. Sounds like they don't make aftermarket pistons for that year. Maybe you can show me the right pass of Finding a piston for my Savage. Thank you

You are looking for Wiseco pistons listed for the DR650, model years of 1990-1995. As I noted in my post they come in 3 sizes; 95/96/97mm.
Take note that the benefit gained from this piston is PRIMARILY from the 2 point boost in compression, from 8.5:1 to 10.5:1. The size increase is minimal in its effect.

I forgot to add that those DR pistons that were made in '90-95 were the very same type as used in the LS650, except that the size was just 1mm larger.

darn, should have done this when we rebuilt our engine...Next time I suppose. Definitely a good deal for sure

Yep, I said the same thing in 2002 when the first engine rebuild became necessary.
I changed the carb to an Edelbrock, Stage 1 cam, and had the cylinder bored/honed/silicone carbide treatment, but did not think of a higher compression version for the piston. It was a few years before I was able to put in a 10.5:1 piston. I like it better than the stock one.

Lance,
Didn't you also skim the head and barrel to raise the compression more, and tighten up the squish band?

In theory, theory and reality are the same. In reality, they aren't...

Yes I did. It seems that the head was 0.015" & the cylinder 0.025" for a 0.040" total. It may have added a half point, which would bring the compression up closer to 11:1. It feels pretty strong when cranking and the pop from the engine is VERY crisp and strong.
I should be able to fire it up again in a couple of days.

If I was going to guess, I'd say skimming the barrel has a more noticeable effect, as it tightens up the squish band. The fact that you were able to remove that much off the barrel, and not have piston-to-head interference, tells me the squish band must be way too generous (stock) for any serious performance.
Right now, I'm leaving the top end alone, as I have a ton of other stuff to do. But, when it is motor time, I'll cc the heads, measure squish band, etc.
Guns ho!
