another squeaky belt fix
11/25/15 at 19:00:45
I have tried all the fixes to eliminate belt squeak. And they all work, for awhile. My conclusion is that dry, dusty climates seem to cause the biggest share of problems. But now I have stumbled upon something that has lasted quite some time. I spray my drive belt with ultra shine (or some such name). It is the stuff you spray on your car tires to make them all glossy. And it seems to work just fine. I live in the southwest where it is always dry and dusty. Just my two cents worth.

The "tire dressings" are not good for the long term durability of rubber. My neighbor would wash and clean up his tractor every fall so he could haul the local kids on a hayride for Trick or Treat, and as part of the process he sprayed Armorall on the outside of the tires. After about 6 years of this the outside of the tires are cracked - while the inside of the tires still look fine.
While if may be fine to use a silicone spray lubricant that is safe for use on rubber - I would avoid using tire dressing sprays on the belt.
(I am not even sure the belt is made of rubber - the black portion seems more like plastic).

I think Armor-All is silicone spray, isn't it? There's a reason why it's called "Harms-It-All". I wouldn't use anything on the belt.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!
