New Zealand has been largely governed by a somewhat centre right party since I was born in 1949. The somewhat centre left party gets in now and again. In the early 1970's, the somewhat centre left party gave me tax rebates on overtime and superannuation contributions. In the late 'seventies, the somewhat centre right government put me in my own home, with a government loan and in 1981 gave me a tax rebate on mortgage interest. In 1984, the centre left party embraced the principles of "Neo Liberalism?" and jobs, including mine began to disappear, the currency was floated and consumers could get second hand Japanese import cars real cheap. The local car assembly industry disappeared within five to seven years. In 1991 the somewhat centre right government "Neo Liberal", introduced an act which significantly reduce the strength of the trade union movement. Highly qualified foreign immigrants began to arrive along with the not so highly qualified'. All in the name of "Free Markets". "Neo Liberalism" was a little watered down in 2004 with the election of a somewhat centre left coalition government, and possibly has regrown slightly since the re election of the somewhat centre right coalition in 2011. Yes we are one of the "freeest" places to do business in the world, our health and education systems are the envy of many countries, except some in western Europe and possibly Japan. Home ownership rates, which in many ways are the cornerstone of a western style democracy, have fallen dramatically since the 1980's and buying a house in a major city is now far beyond the repayment ability of the working and lower middle classes. However consumer electronics, white ware and cars are cheap as chips, we are supposedly free. Dear Americans, try getting a pistol licence in New Zealand, two years membership of a pistol or gun club, who will say you are suitable to own one. A police interview with your wife or partner, if you have one, then endless paper work and fees. This doesn't stop the crims getting pistols or assault rifles as the poor benighted police proved when they busted a P /ice operation this week. Four of them took gunshot wounds in a separate incident The point of this drivel. In New Zealand we are "free", but at a price, unaffordable housing in our major cities, decimated manufacturing, weak unions, a small amount of racial tension, poor wages. We do, however, have some right, depending on gender and social class, to throw plastic dildo's at senior politicians, and to award senior politicians "Dork of the Year?" awards with a free plastic dildo.
