Contemplating making own stereo system!

What are your thoughts? and have you done it? I came across a HDforums post about a 150W powersupply and speakers wires in a leather windshield bag to play music off of a mp3 device (aux cord) I am considering making one of my own as I cannot find reason to spend 550+ on speakers.

I like to listen to tailpipe "music" too much!

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

I removed my muffler and ran open header for that until I noticed I lost top speed from 89 (I weight 350.) to 80 and I was like, Nope gotta put the quiet stock muffler back on lol. I am contemplating taking regular rides back home to see family (320 mile round trip) and its mostly interstate... it gets boring quick

It is far easier and cheaper to mold some ear plugs that have tiny speaker molded into them - and then use an Ipod, MP3 player, or your Cell phone to play music.
I can't imagine riding down the interstate at 70mph and trying to play the music loud enough to hear it over the wind noise.

I made my own using the top two videos as a guide....and they work great.

It is illegal in some states to listen to headphones/earbuds while driving. Bluetooth helmet will work quite well for music on the go.

I have done the earbud thing. the only thing that sucks about it is finding a safe place for my phone and routing the wires and all that jazz. Oh that and selecting music since its useless to use something like Pandora here in West Virginia with all the cellphone deadspots. even though there is considerably more service area than what there was 5 years ago... it still sucks. Oh if it helps I also have a half-helmet so with the earbuds I still get windnosie between my ears and the straps

I'm not a fan of listening to anything other than what's happening around me while riding but it's a different story when stuck in stop-and-barely go traffic. I also wanted to be able to take phone calls on my bike since I am sometimes on-call for work.
I bought the Sena SMH-5 FM bluetooth kit for my helmet. This one connects to your phone and lets you play any media on your phone and also has a built-in FM tuner. It works well for me since I always wear a full face helmet and I have the Moto X phone which lets me answer text messages by voice without touching the phone.
I like going this route because you can still hear all the other sounds around you when listening to music which isn't always the case with ear buds. The sound is pretty good; especially in my new helmet which fits tighter than my previous 7 year old model. Wife says my voice is very clear on phone calls.
It's about $120 and sometimes on sale for 99.

I do mostly what you do. I bought the Sena SMH10 and I either use the earphones that go into the helmet for short trips, or I use the earbuds and foam earpieces I made for longer trips. My Sena can let me talk to my wife when riding double, or listen to the navigator on my Iphone....and seldom do I ever listen to music - although I can play internet music over the Iphone or play music that I have stored on the Iphone. Because the Sena is a Blue Tooth - there are no wires to keep track of........it is handy, and it is not expensive if you already
have an Iphone and pay the monthly service fee......thankfully for me the cell phone service is provided by my employer.

Met a fella down here that swears by the cheap Amazon stuff....
Purchased an am/fm/Bluetooth receiver thing for about $24 bucks, speakers he says were about $19 bucks... sounded good enough sitting still.
He did say at 70 mph he could hear it, but not "clearly" , although he could tell what song was playing.
And he did not have a windscreen.....
Here is a water proof marine system

A cheaper version
http://www.amazon.com/MarineMaxx-Waterproof-Marine-Receiver-Speakers/dp/B0175...
Here is the one he had.... only 15W output though...and you need different speakers for it....

The Shark Audio systems
http://www.sharkmotorcycleaudio.com/
aren't bad and can be heard at highway speeds. The only downsides are that the receiver/amp is NOT water proof and the FM reception isn't the best. Otherwise they work as advertised.

Ohhh, waterproof is needed. I ride in heavy rains and bad wind. a few times in hail. worst conditions iv been in were visability only 6-8 feet from it raining so heavy. I may check out amazon and if all else fails I can always construct something waterproof to have stuff in. will be able to tell in time what would be good
