I ride a LOT in the rain, blood and the beer ( is that a song? )
I installed a rubber flap, came with the hardware ( stainless )..... Kept about 80% of the water coming off the front wheel off my legs, while riding straight forward, turns, well speed and other conditions will direct the splash in ways that you can't really control.
A BIG wind screen helps mucho, looks like chit, but works great, as it keeps a heck of a lot of rain off my upper torso and I can tuck my head behind it if I need too.
I went cheap at first, and I got cheap results...... But if its used only once or twice a year, then it will suffice. However, I spent more, got more, and enjoy a much better ride.
I recommend First Gear Splash Pants and Jacket. They are really portable, and WEARABLE. They dry off quickly, and keep me really dry.
They are so well made and fit, you don't have to "peel" them off, as they are more like clothes than a cumbersome GIANT condom. I have even used them to just walk in the rain, they are that comfortable, and the jacket is great to have for those days where it might get a bit chillier riding than when you started out. They also pack/fold up, into their own pouch.
I get about 2 plus years of excellent rain repelling out of them, and I use them A LOT here in the Pacific Northwest.
Hope that helps
