I have a birdhouse on my porch. I like birds. Over the last two or three years there seems to be a turf war going on. I'd have fledglings tossed out of the nest, eggs broken, a lot of dispute over this bird house.
Last week I heard an upset, almost frantic chirping when I arrived home. I saw a bird in the entry way to the bird house - wings spread, but it wasn't moving. There was a bird trapped inside, also. I got some gloves on and opened the trap door to the bird feeder to release the captive bird. The captive bird, which appeared to be a pregnant female, flew out. The bird stuck in the opening had been dead a while. It's face was mutilated. Eyes gouged out, beak broken. It was only upon removal that I noticed the wings were broken in the entry hole.
My best assumption is that the foreign, or at least unwanted, invader attempted to move on a cornered mother.
This happens in nature. Sometimes I feel we should shelve the PC crap and react accordingly.
