Maybe it is on there and is just tucked down onto the cap real tight and doesn't dangle so I've never paid any attention to it. I might me making a trip to the hardware store too

I...think ....the o-ring is there only to aid in helping removal,as the threads on the cap actually seal in the oil and pressure of the piston when it 's moveing down.when I replace my cap I use only one finger and my thumb and when I feel the o-ring contact the case I stop.Over tighting just damages the o-ring and makes it very hard to remove the cap when the motor is warm,say on a trip when you stop for gas and may need to top off your oil.(I carry a chainsaw oil bottle 4oz of rotella for this need) I haven't replaced my 20yr old o-ring yet.

Finger tight on a hot engine is, I think, too tight on a cold one. Couldn't find an exact match locally, so I ordered one that should fit on Amazon as an 'add on' to a larger order.

I was in there just this week for another reason, and noted they have a large section over with plumbing valves and accessories that has a myriad of o-ring sizes in one of those big bins with the little labeled drawers.

While waiting for a 23mm x 17mm x 3mm o-ring from Amazon.com, just for kicks I decided to see if a seal conditioner, ATP AT-205 Re-Seal, would restore enough resilience to the o-ring for it to seal the filler cap again.

I couldn't remove the o-ring without destroying it because it had hardened, so I soaked the filler cap + o-ring in the AT-205. After about half an hour, the o-ring seemed softer. I put the filler cap back on the bike and rode it a couple days later.

So far, no leaks!

FOLLOW UP: Still no leaks 1,000 miles later. Though I finally located a replacement, I'm leaving it in until it leaks again.
