Normal oil consumption for an LS650 with 2200 mile
08/01/16 at 11:14:11
Hi all,
I have an LS650 with about 2200 miles on it. Took a great vacation trip on it. Traveled about 500 miles, mostly freeway driving. When I got home, I saw that it used a slight amount of oil. The oil filler hole showed that it went from 'full' at the start of the trip to about mid level after coming home. Took about 5 ounces of oil to get it back to 'full' again.
So my question: Would this be normal oil consumption for the bike with this mileage? (I thought I saw somewhere on this website that some oil consumption is normal?)
The bike has been well taken care of following the regular schedule of maintenance. Not over revved, and kept within the normal freeway speed limits. Have used Rotella oil as is recommended on this website.
Open to your thoughts.
Thanks for your help,
Ron G

When traveling at interstate speeds...the bike does use oil. Not sure if it goes past the rings....or just blows out the vent tube.
You do need to watch the oil level when taking long rides on the interstate.

Freeway speeds will blow some oil out the breather. Like Dave said, just keep an eye on it.

When I did an oil change, I could run it hard quite a while, no oil used.
After the oil had 1,500 miles on it,run it hard for just a while, used some oil.
Oil use varies with how hard you run it
And
The miles on the oil.

I don't see how mileage on the oil would affect consumption.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

It'd be interesting to take a known volume of new, cool,15/40 and time it through a small funnel, then the same volume at operating temperature, and compare those findings to oil that came out when the oil got changed. I would expect it would take less time for the hot old oil than the hot new oil.

Someone (maybe Dave, Versy, Serow) posted a video a few weeks back that showed a similar experiment comparing dino and synthetic and what the flow rate of new versus old/used oil was...I think?
Somebody help me here....

Was me.......supposedly petroleum oil flows slower as it gets dirty, synthetic does too....but not as much.
However I do believe JOG is correct....the actual oil molecules become shorter as the oil ages.
