I've cut down a few flywheels, knocked about 2 lbs off the over 6 lb weight.
Reports so far have been positive. A little snappier acceleration with no down sides.
Swapping one requires a puller, a deep 46mm socket, and a few tools, and a decent skill level and good shop practices.
Wondering if there is a market for one. Would it make a difference if there was a tool rental program that included the odd stuff needed?

Generic universal holder. I'm going to make up a specific one on the off chance someone wants a light flywheel and I do the tool package.

I am assembling the needed tools in kit that can be "rented" at an affordable price to the forum members.  It would require a small rental fee to cover the wear and tear on the tools and the investment cost - as well as a deposit to promote the timely return of the tools in good condition.

The currently available tools are:
Flywheel holder
Rotor Puller
Large deep socket for the flywyheel nut

One thing that makes it a bit less appealing, is that tools are somewhat heavy and bulky, and it will require a medium sized Flat Rate box to fit them in....so shipping is $26.90 to send the tools both ways.

Other tools that will be available are a clutch holder for loosening/tightening the clutch hub nut, and a puller to help split the center engine case.

If anyone needs the tools before I get an official rental policy set up, send me a PM and we will work something out.  

Wow!  That flywheel holder makes me want to throw stones at the one I built.

But.....I don't have a mill.  I used an old spark plug socket for the 1/2" square drive, and a couple of pieces of angle iron.

Actually, if you want stupid simple, just take a piece of 1/8" x 1" flat stock and drill an O/S 8mm hole in one end. Bolt it up loosely to one of the flywheel threaded holes. Then see what you can make the other end line up to (motor mount or footage mount bolt). Then drill a hole that fits over the bolt removed from the footpeg or whatever, and Voila!. One flywheel holder.

I'm kinda fuzzy on this tool.  When do you need it?

I know I've swapped rotors w/out it.

If you want to take the flywheel nut loose and don't have an an impact wrench - you need the flywheel holder to hold the crank in place....and it also helps when you are torquing down the flywheel nut.

It also can be used to hold the crank in place when you are working on the nut on the other side of the crankshaft that holds the drive gear in place.

FWIW, it's a spectacularly bad idea to hold one end of a pressed together crank and apply torque to the other end. As in, hold nut on one end of the crank and loosen or tighten a nut on the other end.
You run the danger o twisting the crank out of alignment.
