Bot....Good deal!  Put some miles on it and enjoy it!  Glad you found a good deal.

Used road bikes can come along at very cheap prices...if you are in the right place at the right time.  About a year ago my neighbor wanted to sell his Volusia.  It was in great shape, well cared for, nearly new Michelin Commander tires...and he only wanted $ 1,400.

I was really tempted as I knew it was a great bike - I just didn't need a big V-Twin in my garage.

Picked up my new 2017 Rebel 500 today and rode 30 miles without incident. I have yet to find the petcock for reserve on the gas tank, I am guessing one must rely on the digital fuel gauge. Having wanted mid controls for the past few years I now have them, but my hips are rebelling from the low seat and the high pegs. First manufacturer with a taller seat or forward controls will have an order. The bike is very smooth at 60 MPH although there is some buzz in the hand grips.

I think it will be a good low maintenance motorbike.

Paint it glossy black with some metallic green highlights and it becomes plumb ..... purty.

Put the 8.5 gallon gas mod on it and it becomes ...... Purty Awesome !

When Honda gives you a fuel gauge - they don't give you a petcock valve or a reserve.

That was what I was thinking. We drive automobiles without reserve, I will be OK.

I suggested to RYCA they get into the forward control business for this bike, but got no reply.  Someone will make a nice pile if done right. Cool

Forward controls for which bike?  The S40 and every other bike in this thread already has forward controls.  There are vendors in the Marketplace that make extended forward controls for the Savage.

Do you want "mid" or "standard" footpeg mounts for the Savage?

I have been ridin' the Rebel 500 for a few days now and my hips and legs are starting to acclimate to the new ridin' position.

I am staring to get over the appearance of the Rebel and like the bike.

I am always going to love primitive motorbikes and especially the thumpers.

I am thinking the Japanese manufacturers have really made a lot of progress since 1986. Other than changing oil, and adjusting the chain periodically, the bike is pretty much maintenance free. The first valve adjustment is at 16,000 miles and after talking with CB500 riders they say they haven't bothered to adjust the valves at 16,000. The Rebel 500 shares the same engine as the CB500.

As I near 80 years old I am not sure how much longer I will be ridin' and I want to ride as often as I can. Sitting on the garage floor doing maintenance is no longer the fun that it was 40 years ago.

I think this bike is going to be OK.

Wow Kenny , you have my respect ! I can only hope I'm still riding when I'm 80 ! That's just awsome ! I may not be too fond of its looks , but Honda builds solid bikes that last , you made a good choice. As far as riding position, you have better control with mids than forwards. Try this next time out , when turning left lift right foot just off the peg and do the same going right , just that tiny bit of force coming off the peg the bike just floats thru the turns. All due to pegs being below you rather than out in front. I don't ride like that but it demonstrates the leverage you now have.
How are the bars ? The bike is perfect size for you. Bar position is comfort as much as it is leverage too. I may have to road test one just for fun. Do you know the rated H/P ?
Anyways enjoy the bike , ride smart , ride safe

Ruttly,

The horsepower is rated at 45 and it seems to have a little more torque than I would expect from a high revving twin.

I will give lifting my feet a try tomorrow.

The most difficulty that I am having is lifting my feet high enough to get them off and on the pegs. I have known for years that I could corner at least 10 MPH faster with mid controls. Given enough time I will get used to the mid controls.

Kenny, I've been reading this thread with interest because I've also been looking at that Honda.  I'm past the 70 mark and also have trouble getting my feet up on the pegs and down again at stops etc. when riding my Guzzi.  I do fine with the Savage, it is always comfortable in that respect.  So I am looking at replacing my Guzzi with something new and I want ABS brakes.  The Savage will be the last bike I part with.

Anyway, I have found that I can often lower the pegs on a bike nearly an inch with offset pegs and still adjust the rear brake pedal and shifter to accomodate.  Then I also add about an inch of high density foam to the seat and that helps with the riding position.  Great bike, thanks for the updates.

It does appear that the new Rebel does have a pretty low seat height for the use of mid-pegs.  Generally the bikes with pegs in the middle are not a "cruiser" style bike, and the seat height is higher on dual sport, adventure or standard style bikes.

Engineer,

If you see any available pegs for the new Rebels please send a PM. I am planning to add a couple of inches to the seat very soon. I am riding as is for the time being because I really had a heck of a time trying to test ride bikes with mid controls. I want to get my hips and legs acclimated to the low seat height and mid controls before I make any changes. The new Rebel has only been in this country for a couple of weeks so it is going to be a while before any after market parts are available.

Dave,

The Harleys, especially the Sportster and the new Street bikes, have the mid controls with low seat heights and because of the additional weight I was afraid to test ride them.

The Honda Dealer put one of the Rebels on a lift, in the service department, and clamped the bike down for me to test. I practiced picking up my feet from the ground and putting them on the pegs until I thought I was going to scream from the pain. I walked across the street for lunch and came back and went through the torture again. I then test rode it for about 10 miles and went into a church parking lot and practiced starting and stopping until I thought it was safe to go back on the highway. I tested the 300 CC Rebel and on the return trip I had a head wind, although I could easily maintain 60 MPH I probably wouldn't have been able to maintain 70 MPH so I decided on the 500 CC model. I gave the dealer a deposit and told them I will be back to pick up the bike tomorrow, which I did. I have some new exercises I am doing in the morning where I splay my legs and that may help.  I am definitely going to raise the seat before long.
