Thanks on the tank. Engineer by trade. I don't know about the confident part, it's been a fun challenge though.

That's my first build in the background. It was a 95 Nighthawk. I cut the neck out the frame, used the stock fork and built the rest, some parts like the tank, fenders and seat got built more than once Embarrassed

I agree that having a variable air spring would be convenient for testing purposes, but as soon as you select a final rate I'd move towards a traditional shock. You'd be surprised how hot the oil in a shock or fork gets. Oil, having a much higher viscosity then air is more suited to cope with the heat. You may find that a MTB shock that was designed to support a 40 pound bike and 170 pound rider will not endure a 350 pound bike plus the rider. Not for long anyway.

I still have not figured out the spring rate to air pressure relationship yet but I have put a few miles on. I've run at both 150 and 175 psi each for a 15-20 miles each. I can tell it's a bit stiffer at 175 psi. 175 psi give me a comfortable ride and is not too spongy when braking. It gets close to bottoming or maybe bottoms lightly when I hit the brakes hard. It's designed to run up to 280 psi so I think I'm in a comfortable range.

Damping is set at a minimum for both extension and compression. I increased the compression damping from a 1 to a 2 on a scale of 4. It stiffened noticeably so I put it back at a 1 setting.

I've touched it after riding the roughest paved road I could find nearby. The shock did not feel warm to the touch. So far, so good.

Good input.

Regarding the correlation between the air shock and a spring, its a simple matter of putting you air shock on a shock/spring dyno to see what rate spring would provide the same force as the air shock.

While the air shock is working for testing purposes, I still think it's a good idea to replace it upon completion of the test phase to remove the single point of failure of the front suspension.

I picked up 21 inch rims for both front and back. The front is a complete wheel/axle/brake assembly from an RMZ450. The back is a loose rim of the same size soon to go to Buchanan spoke along with the hub.

To accept the new axle I needed to turn some hubs and shorten the forks a bit. I also had to bend the forks just a tad more to maintain offset at about 2.5 inches. Hubs and fixturing for re-welding shown.

Brake caliper to arrive later this week

Since you are going yo have to weld a swingarm, I'd give consideration to fabricating the mounts a single shock.
