Personally, I would say the number is higher.
But I would say it doesn't explain the "why" its more divided.

Go back a spell, all you had is a dominant left directive to education, social and political media, etc.
Those who side with those beliefs were happy that their president, leadership, etc, all agreed.
Those on the "right" or ult-right", would say I bet, that President Obama was tearing apart our country with HIS beliefs.
But of course, that number would be way smaller than what we see today, for a whole host of reasons, perhaps.

Now, that the gloves are off, so to speak, the political correctness being exposed in business, education, etc, free speech is allowed to be practiced, as it should be.

It is almost a new feeling, emotion, to freely and with confidence, express that view of which would have got you tarred and feathered, for sharing, just a few years ago.

Those opposing don't like be challenged, for they didn't have too, they were RIGHT, as reported by the media, education, etc....
They didn't have to explain, they were above it.

Yeah, and now you got the wishy washy "middle" who only want to be on the winning team.

As with a bad economy, the president gets blamed, yet as witnessed now, things are robust economically, and its not because of him, or it won't hold, etc....

He is getting blamed for this.
Oh yeah, his actions warrant it, no doubt, I can't stand to even hear him talk, sounds like a late night pitchman on TV, ARG!

However, its not him, its the deplorable coming out with real clout.
A real, "I am sick and tired of this crap and I am not going to take it anymore"

Too many folks in DC, media, academia, etc, were prospering off the "old" ways, that genie has left the bottle, but they will do whatever means necessary, to hold on to that influence and power that assured them their livelihood.

Hopefully, we can be better for it, as all sides should be present in representing any ideas that govern a free society.
