Is critical thinking dead?
02/10/18 at 15:16:55

I have not been active on the TT as I view it as an exercise in futility.  The posters on the right of the political spectrum will never be convinced by those on the left, and vice versa. Remains all the insults and the deepening divisions between the two clans.

That being said, I need to vent! What I object to are the fake news in many emails and Facebook postings I keep seeing from friends and acquaintances, usually aimed at personalities on the left.  Not surprising as most of my friends are from a gun club (I am a match director there), and a vintage car club with few, if any, liberals as members.

Today on a distant relative Facebook page, I saw a posting, claiming Adam Schiff’s sister was married to the son of George Soros. The site claiming so is a well know proponent of conspiracies.  One tiny problem: Adam Schiff does not have a sister.

I was also recently sent the photo of a young man in his twenties, sporting a Nazi uniform. The caption claimed that was George Soros, and that he worked for Himmler during the second world war. A quick search on the net will show that Soros was born in a Jewish family, and that he was only 9 years old when the war started, 14 when it ended. He is not the man in the uniform.

My point is what happened to critical thinking? Are people now so ready to accept whatever news fit their world view that they will not fact check?

people now have alternative facts.....

I think it's very astute of you to see that most of the facebook "fake news" slanders left wing personalities

I do try to be reasonable, I don't think I can be unbiased as we all have our own point of views, but if the argument is reasonable, then I'll return it with reason. if it's obviously directed to stirring up more BS through fear and character assassination then that's what it returns

very glad to hear from you, I hope you'll participate more, but of course that's up to you

Critical thinking isn't dead, but it's certainly not real common. It's not taught in public school. It's laughed at and mocked.

Lets just call it Political Correctness, that puts a tidy bow on it, and we can move on to other things we want to direct your attention to  Grin

Case in point.

This little boy use to always cry wolf.
Folks came to help.
No wolf.

He cried wolf one day.
No one came, except the wolf.

Folks cried sexual harassment of Willie.
The little boy just laughed, called it a vast conspiracy.

Now the little boy calls sexual harassment....

But Willie showed them it really doesn't matter,
As long as the greater belief, er....trumps  Grin

Yeah, amazing, ain't it, how so much flipping and a flopping, goes on, but its all justified.

Thank goodness the ones who decide the real outcome of the elections don'y give a ratz arse about this fake news, talking points, and media bias spin!

I vaguely remember when, in my childhood, watching a debate.  I don't mean the one line mudslinging crap we get at the Presidential Debates..I mean a debate when a proposition was made and then two sides of the proposition were put forward, discussed and each side tried to refute the other's position.  They seldom settle anything per see but did give a deeper view into why the topic had two sides, allowing us often to at least understand why the idiot on the other side took his position. Cheesy

"...the fake news in many emails and Facebook postings..."

It goes the other way ,
  JUST  AS  MUCH
       (Ask Bot)

And it always has, and always will.
Until lately, when certain people had to have,
“Safe Places”

Ya bought that new fancy Gun,
You take it to a Gun Club, then like minded people will admire it craftsmanship.
Ya don’t take it to a  ‘Rainbow’ parade.

Just as someone from a Rainbow Parade,
does not, come to a Gun club, to show off his new Thong.

YES, The first part, is what all of us need to get back to.
It once was, can be again.
Two people, (one way over their, one way over here).
They talk, they Liston.
They See/Understand, what each other is talking about.
They come to a decision, which Both can agree on.
Then they Both decide, that idea will be revisited to refine,
as the, what does/what doen't work is reviled.

Unfortunately, today:
"...the idiot on the other side..."
Gets in the way, and one can't, 'See'.

Interesting response......
Prompts the question, why do you come here, why do any of us?

Who comes to "learn"?

Who comes to spew, call names?

Critical thinking is the defense against the things you guys are talking about.

Here's one
We are taught to thank the
Heroes
Who are in other countries
Protecting our Freedoms.

Where are the threats to our Freedoms?

For me, it is mostly entertainment.
Also, to keep in line, the
 NO  facts, spewing posters.
