I had about 250 mile ride home today that was joyfully "un-eventfull".   We all had a nice ride out Hwy 60 west from camp then I headed north and Dave and Stew headed west.    So I had light traffic on Ocoee River Road , then a 75/80 mph super-slab ride ride to with in 40 miles of home.

All together it was a (10am eastern to 02:30 central) ride that left me grinning.  Wink

I'll be ordering a new front tire very soon .   The Front Sport Demon has lasted 5,987 miles and it is wore into the wear bars and beginning to "Bust/Rip" in places from stress.    So I'll try to post a picture.    It still has a few miles of tread before being declared "BALD"  but those little tear-marks are some-what worrysome !  Undecided
yea , I know there are still those outside roll of tits that just refuse to be worn off ... I might have got them but the foot pegs were in the way !  Grin

we got more than a picture , we got a story tp got a story to go with the picture.   I'll have to put the pictures into my computer first though.

I got home yesterday just in time to clean-up for our turn to cook at a local Church/Resturant we help out at .   Now this morning ... Maybe after Church I'll have a big enough "Block" of computer time to do pictures.

Glad you all had fun. Now order your new tire. Those tears do look worrisome.

There were lots of times when the front tire was stressed on this trip … even border-line  being "misused" .    We were probably pushing our limits and the limits of our machines more than we should have.    One of the days we went hwy 28 up toward the Dragon for  lunch.   But   those really tight , slow speed  twisties , don't seam to be as demanding on the rubber as those Long , Tight ,  Down-Hill , New Black-top twistiness of the North Ga. Mountains.

It was really FUN , ...  Undecided ...     The Camp-Ground was good too , good as any we have found  but  its like the sign says : " Best little Valley above the Clouds in N. Ga."   means ... it gets cold when the sun goes down !  Grin

Arrived home today around noon local time.

Dave is on the road and I suspect may have an ETA around 6pm or so...but he had a planned detour on the way so he may be a bit later than that.

Timing:   Second week of June is just about weather ideal, just past the rainy season and it is just barely warming up at night to over 55 degrees.   Days are great, not hot yet.   Nights are still long john weather this early in the season.

Facilities:   4 stalls each of Bathroom/showers with just barely lukewarm water after it runs a while, has a park style permanent grill and a fire ring per campsite.

Local amenities:   a block away gas station/restaurant with a breakfast pizza for $10 a pizza & coffee and drinks.   No Lodge food at all yet ......

Cost:    Moderate, equal to most park service places before the senior discount.

Distance:    Ideal for MM and Stew, everybody else gets an 8-10 hour drive/ride.   MM likes that short 4 hour drive to get to his house.

Roads:   Sweeper style mostly -- there are only 2-3 Fontana Dam & NO Dragon level curvy road sections available anywhere nearby.

Neatly kept up, clean, a woman comes and cleans the Bath House and the cabins every single day.

Inside the Lodge itself is neat and clean, but tenters apparently aren't allowed inside the Lodge area, it is reserved for folks renting the lodge rooms.    All the doors have combo locks on them, including the Bath House and the squat toilet areas.

I think the place would show better after it was fully open -- we got there the week before the first large scheduled activity and we were one of only 3 camp sites filled at any one time.

Cost per person ~ $12 ~ per night in a shared tent.   $15 a night if staying singleton per tent.

MM likes that short 4 hour drive to get to his house.

250 miles , and crossing a time zone .   5.5 hours ride time .   Still not to far for a easy day.

--------------------------------------------------

The last day the owner turned the hot water on.  I understand the water heater wasn't plugged in good.

Well , when we got back to camp Thursday evening  …  we had a Note on our fire wood  !

Not a nice note either !

Something about getting thrown out of the campground …
and
Our gas bottle was gone .

We did burn the wood ... after Stew broke them poles  into 3 foot pieces.  That is your (OldFeller's) shirt hanging on the pole and lighting up the night !

Well, I have to admit the original configuration might have threatened to scorch the nearest trees a little bit ......

You never saw the very first configuration, some of the tee pee like poles were 15 feet long, not 5-7 feet like when you saw it.

...... but the campground people were there out walking around while I was building it and easily could have said something about it then.

How much of their heartburn actually came from my not using $20 worth of their expensive firewood, but instead getting it out of the woods?   And not paying them for several fire starter logs from their store?

I betcha they make up and post a bunch of new rules now about "safe, small camp fires"  and about not using wood from the woods at all, must use their sorry split pine pieces.

The current rules posted on the deck just say you can't cut down any green live trees, but you can cut down and take dry wood from the woods.

Wink

Looks like they made you take out all the wood that went above the rim of the fire ring, which was actually a fair amount of wood.

But at least the steel ring glowed good with a strong projected light show from the three (3) laser cut 2 Wheels of Suches logos.    Bet that sucker got hot and radiated nice warmth all the way over to the picnic table.

I made it home right at 6:30 yesterday....then proceeded to unpack some very soggy gear.

Our ride (Stew and I) on Saturday was mostly dry, we did run into a storm on 19 trying go south up the mountain back to camp - it was around lunch time so we just turned around and found a place to eat lunch and wait it out.  We got a light rain while we ate - but then by the time we finished the storm was gone and we got a bit more riding in before calling it a day.  We found some really nice rural roads with nice pavement, nice curves and zero traffic.

We returned to camp and loaded up the bikes, took down the pop up shelter and packed somethings up for the return trip - and just left the basics in camp for the last night (tent/cots/bedding).  We walked up to the corner store to get a drink - and that is when the rain hit with vigor.  We hid out under the awning for a while, and there were 2 of those Polaris trike things stuck there.....they don't have any better weather protection that a motorcycle. A young couple from Pittsburgh pulled in to get out of the hard rain - they are on a month long trip riding double on a big KTM adventure bike.  We made it back to camp, and then discovered my small tent leaks badly, and unfortunately the pop up shelter was packed away in the trailer and there was no way to go get it without getting soaked to the bone.  The rain stopped and we just had to sop up as much water as we could with the towels we brought - thank goodness the air temperature was warm and we weren't cold.

I knew my tires were going to be worn out by the end of this trip - but I was a bit surprised by the wear patterns.  The front tire has plenty of tread down the center - the aggressive cornering on the curves has worn the tread off the sides....while the rear tire has plenty of tread on the sides but is worn down to the wear bars in the center, and is worn flat across the tread as if I was cruising down the highway all the time.

Oldfeller - I don't believe you got a good feel for the local roads, as we found plenty of curves to scrub our tires away.  While I agree that most of them are not 11 miles of 318 consecutive Dragon curves - we didn't ever feel that we didn't get a good dose of twisties in our daily routine.  Most of the really curvy roads we found were the 30-40 mph turns - not big sweepers like the Cherohala Parkway.

The campground "hot water" issue was unfortunate - but it was a plumbing related problem and not a normal condition at the campground.  The campground does provide seasoned firewood at a very reasonable $10 a wheelbarrow load - and the owners complaint was not that you had gathered up your own wood....the issue was a 6 foot high stack of wood in the fire ring and a bottle of gasoline sitting next to the pit.  The workers watching you were evidently not the ones who are in authority to interact with the campers - but they later reported it to the owner.  I believe the management handled this very well, and were proper in what they did.  This campground is the nicest one we have stayed at, and they work hard to keep the place in good condition.

It is a bit inconvenient that there isn't food available most of the week at Two Wheels of Suches - but the Friday/Sat/Sun meals are great.  We did find that a lot of the local restaurants just don't get enough business during the week to stay open and are only open on weekends.  We started to just eat Yogurt/pop tarts/bananas from the cooler to get the day started - then ate a good lunch while out riding.

SUMMARY - I really like the area, and it is a bit less touristy than the areas up in NC/TN.  The benefit is the roads are not as crowded and we didn't have too many issues with slow traffic holding us up for long.....the downside is that you have to drive a little while to find restaurants that are open.  The roads in this area are very good motorcycle roads......not every road offers the tight twisties that the Dragon is known for - but you can find them around on roads like Warwoman, 28 south of Highlands down to the South Carolina border, Wolf Pen Gap, parts of the Richard B. Russel Scenic Highway.  This area is NOT a replacement to the Tail of the Dragon - but is a very nice area to ride and provide an alternative to the areas we have been riding previously.

Dave, I knew the original fire stack was a bit excessive and perhaps unsafe, so I cut it in half down to 6 feet.   Problem is that 6 feet was still excessive in the eyes of the folks running the place.

Did they offer to give you back my gasoline?   And was the note phrased "nasty" as MM says?   Did they really threaten to kick YOU out for something that I had done two days previously?   Where were these restrictives rule posted?

All of these are a little bit pertinent to the question at hand.   Me stacking up some firewood while staying inside the rules posted on the main building certainly shouldn't be grounds for kicking YOU out or giving YOU grief.   Sorry about that.   Bad on me for that one.

Mo's Kickstand Lodge is more our speed as far as rules go, I think.   Plus the bunkhouse is right nice for creaky old men (Badwolf and I both think so).

Good news, I fixed the little handlebar issues with my bike already and now that I am no longer in pain I am not so adamant about not riding any more.

Well Said Dave !

Suches  or  Dragon  … they are both about the same distance for me and both have their good point   and both have very few bad points  ,   so I'm good with visiting both places at least once a year !  Wink

More pictures later , to much catching-up going on now !  Embarrassed

I rode the Cafe' bike approximately 1,200 miles - the most mileage was MM and I on Tuesday when we  did 340 miles.  My fuel usage was somewhere in the high 50's/low 60's for the trip - speeds varied between 40-65 mph for most of the rides.  A lot of the back roads and twisties were 3rd gear cruising and pretty easy on fuel.  There were a few times we had to get on a highway and run 60+ mph - we tried to avoid that when possible.

The new cam/rockers in the bike seemed to be working well - I didn't hear any weird noises coming from the engine.

The "Fire Note" stated that we would be required to leave the campground if we burned the 4 foot tall fire.  It was firm - it wasn't nasty.  They provide seasoned firewood for $10 a wheelbarrow load, and firestarter logs at $1 each........most folks don't see the need to scrounge around and build a bonfire, and I agree that the excessive amount of wood that was stacked in the small firepit should not have been ignited with gasoline.
