Well, you example it perfectly, it’s all about degrees.
Who decide those lines?
Who restricts them, who extends them?
Based upon, what, morality..... who’s

This is why, and it looks like it might not be possible, to understand a person “own” need to firearms.

To walk in anither man’s shoes, it is said you can often understand his life better.....
I don’t want to shoot a machine gun, tho  Grin

We decide those lines.  We propose legislation and implement laws as a society.

Usually the ones who go out and take part will propagate the most change.

I see your point, how this could be a "power trip" ..."

Never saw, or felt that the buyers were,
on a ‘Power Trip’.
Always felt is was just a, ‘Get them before you can’t’.

Here is a way I think may help.
One. Person says, ‘I Like Sports’.
And when asked further, they say:
“I like  Base Ball, Football, Hockey, Golf,  but not Soccer, or Basket Ball.
Another Person says:
“I like Basket Ball, Soccer, Base Ball, Football,   but not,  Golf or Hockey.
That doesn’t  mean that one  of those sports is bad.

Refine even more, a Golf Club..
Some say, it should be like this.
Some say, it should be like that.

All these people, have a myriad of reasons,
they, like or dislike, something.

Someone saying, “I don’t like,  ‘that’,  so Golf should be banned”
Will cause, Most  Golfers, to Join forces,
whether or not, they like, ’this’, or, ’that’.

JLC,  Made a terrific case, for why he owns a particular rifle.

So, ‘Why’ a certain firearm ?
As many reasons, as their is for Chrome on a MC.

Raydawg he specifically stated he was in the woods.  Theres a higher chance of killing someone on the drive there than accidentally shooting someone standing on a frozen ice pond.

Your comparison of drinking and driving around other people is not the same.  If people wanting to shoot did it where it was illegal, like through town and at local pubs then it would be the business of others.

I have a lot of land, with gated private roads.  Come drink and drive at my place, nobody will care, and its legal.

You are comparing obvious crimes like vehicular assault to legal activities and I can't imagine anyone is going to take those arguments seriously.

Exactly. Thank you.

Hmmm, your response contains the real core of the issue; in Europe where assault weapons are a bit more difficult to get, the motor vehicle has become the weapon of choice for mass murder.  In the US, semi's (the guns, not the trucks) are, although more people are killed on the highways than in mass killings.  Hmmmm.  It's a tangled web(ster) we weave. Smiley  I think the answer may be "Kill them all, let God decide" oops, reverting to the Nam days headset.  Getting old.

JOG - your paranoia or perhaps your grasp of the truth, while interesting, doesn't seem to advance the question at hand - why do gun guys (and gals) (excluding 2nd amendment issues) feel the need or desire for semi automatic rifles and pistols in a day and age where they are, almost weekly (or perhaps monthly), used for a mass murder.
Some of the points made have been for shooting pleasure, hunting, and because they can or wont be able to in some future USA (If as JOG points out, Feinstein were President, the Congress pinko and the Supremes Russian picks (this later group is sorta like the NHL of our government I suppose). Does this bring the topic back on track?

Because some idiot decides to misuse something I enjoy having is no reason for me to throw away what I enjoy having. People are beaten to death with hammers. Should I throw away my hammers? And I HAVE a collection of hammers, in fact, I have thirteen or fourteen of them and almost bought another last night. I'm looking at getting a Ruger 10/22 because I have two boys to teach gun handling and marksmanship skills.. and
I Like them..
And if they eliminate the AR15, plenty of other guns are out there that would satisfy the needs of a killer.

I'm more confused by how anyone could think that because guns are used wrongly that the people who own guns should somehow be ashamed of owning guns that are not used wrongly.
That's as reasonable as saying people who drink and don't drive should stop drinking because people drink and drive and kill people.

Just to keep things straight, the battle of Bunker Hill and breeds Hill where "won" by the British But they were not evenly armed. The British were armed with 75 caliber muskets ,the Americans with mostly personal rifles averaging 40 caliber ,which had the advantage of be more accurate at longer distances .

                        dead                          wounded        force
Americans        115                                305             2400

British             226                               828              3000
So ,it may well be an advantage to be better armed than the force your opposing.

Who said gun owners should be ashamed?  This searching for innuendo is part of the obstacles of having an adult progressive conversation.

The OP wants to know why we feel the need to own an AR-15.  That's it.  All the other stuff is just superfluous and an attempt to push agenda.

I own AR's for fun.  See how easy that is.

I amply explained that.
I even explained why people shouldn't feel pressured to Not own them.
