In fact,.. if you follow any hashtags on social media, you are likely being guided by Russian bots...
Also...Fox News and other conservative outlets in turn have helped amplify the message by reporting on the #WalkAway “movement".
Right-Wing media is becoming an echo of Russian bot influence.

Yeah we are going to have to be careful utilizing any social media as true information of trends going forward. The way this one spread is highly suspicious, its percentage increase is astounding until the method is examined.

Arc Digital has been on top of this for a while. A good example is how purchasing algorithms are used to buy hundreds of concert tickets within seconds of opening sales online. They then resell the tickets at a higher price.

"Bots" can take essentially useless articles, posts, hashtags and artificially create a smokescreen of sorts that amplifies the sharing/liking of topics. Combine that with browser histories, online profiling etc. and it appears there's tons of people agreeing to do, or like something when its possible that its (the social acceptance) been fabricated.

"The primary functional goal of an astroturfed campaign like this one is to manipulate public opinion by gaming online algorithms to amplify certain content and push it onto people’s social media feeds and to the top of search engine results."

Ashley Madison had their own version of this system.

Social media response has caused a number of people to be asked to leave many venues, not just restaurants. It also is the primary means of issuing threats to the owners of said restaurants, even when those restaurants weren't even involved.
