He was as surprised as anyone that he won the election due to a statistical fluke. If you watch him at his rallies, he only wants adoration and there are a relatively small number of people who will give him that.
Now back to your question, he knows his fervent supporters are racists, even if trump himself is not, he knows that is what they want, and he needs the fawning. That's why the Saudis and N.Korea gave him the big military pomp. They know he's a sociopathic narcissist.
He's so stupid he believes his own bullshit. When it all comes crashing down, as it will when he's not in office in two years, then the fun will really begin as his protections will be gone. And Muller, as well as the city of New York have now been able to investigate him and that will only get worse for him.
