1st Amendment vs. truth...

Every election,... I get sick n' tired of all the lying on both sides.
It's 1st Amendment protected speech,.. but jeez...

Ad after ad, repeated a 100 times of candidates lying about their opponents and lying about their own accomplishments and standing on issues.
Video and audio clips cut of in mid sentence that you know are taken totally out of context. Images altered to look menacing, and dire music added to instill fear.
And then there's the deceptive PAC groups with names like, "Citizens for clean air" that are really backed by big oil, or Pharma, or Monsanto... just posing as citizens to push their agenda.

When does the right to free speech cross the line into deceiving voters?...
Who's rights are more important?...
Shouldn't we have a clear choice based on honest facts?
This is how some people, even still, believe Obama is a Muslim or Kenyon...
..and I don't mean to single out the Right for this either... Liberals do it too.
I think the voting public deserves better.  At least honesty, from those that would represent us.

Finally,.. glad it's over.   Huh

All great points Sero.

Which is why I've been saying that corporate money does not belong in politics.  Citizens United is the single worst thing to happen to this country in decades.

Everyone should run their campaigns like Beto and the democratic socialists did.  Individual donors - no PAC or corporate money.

Better still, we should make all campaign finance publicly funded.  Issue everyone a stipend from the government for 'x' amount.  That amount might vary depending on local, state and federal levels.  But think of what that would do to the candidates.  A true level playing field.  No corporate influence.  No koch or Soros influence.

The governor's race here in Illinois set records for spending, yet we can't pay our pensions... How F'd up is that?

Money in politics is one of the biggest problems (if not the biggest) we face in this country.  Citizens United is legalized bribery.

Nothing's wrong with our election methods.

Truth is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to ads. Here in Missouri, Claire ran ads that Josh Hawley was against pre-existing condition coverage. She said that because he was part of a lawsuit against Obamacare. She extrapolated that to say he was against pre-existing condition coverage which he said of course he wasn't, just that particular plan.

He ran ads saying her husband got rich during her time in the Senate using her influence. She said that wasn't true, he was just a good business man.

Who is telling the truth?

In Missouri, the largest media outlets are all Democratic mouthpieces so they 'believed' Claire's ad against Josh, but were quiet on his charge against Claire. We have no unbiased media in Missouri.

So what are we to do? You can't rely on the media to be fair. There's no such thing as an unbiased fact checker.

Leave it as it is and let the public figure out who is more truthful.
