That bigger rear brake was my biggest surprise so far.

I had to get inventive with the rear pulley and used an aluminum tent peg for the spacer. You must have had a similar experience .

The 450 rear wheel is a narrower width rim.
But , the brake shoe is the same as the Savage . So really the 450 is the easier way to go . You just slip the Savage brake right into the 450 hub and it fits !

On the pulley side , the mounting bolts for the chain sprocket are on a smaller dia. circle.
I have 1981 wheels (1 set 450) and (1 set 550) they have different spoke patterns.
The 550 has the same sprocket as the 450 does so :

I had to slot the mounting holes in the (belt) pulley to let the mounting bolts through. Its aluminum and easy to do. Getting the pulley centered was easy too , just measure the gap and make/find a spacer to fit. Wink

The front is even easier : just 1/4 inch spacer on the calipier mount , and your done !

I've got about $100. in my 450 set if your interested ? plus shipping. I looked at Daves post about rims and tires for the Cafe Bikes is why I went with the 550's , Shinko makes a 110/90-16 that would be just fine on the 450 rim - it took a lot of "Doing" to make that 110/90-16 grab on the wide 550 rim and blow up to seating. But I already had the tire on hand so ..... Roll Eyes

The 110/90-16 will look a bit skinny for those use to seeing 140/90 tires on the bike - but it is plenty of tire for the Savage and I ran a 110/80-18 for a while and it never broke loose or failed to provide the needed traction. Old Norton's and Ducati's and Triumphs and BMW's all had more weight and more power than the Savage - and they were all using tires that were 4.00 or 110 in width.

I am sure when you wear this tire out, you can find something just a bit wider - and knowing how many miles you put on a bike it should be some kind of a touring tire.

I got on my back brake today and the "brake-stay-lever" broke ! Sad

The hub spun around and the "spline-ed-nub" that the brake lever fastens to - broke off from the hub .

bad , bad , bad Yea , I could just buy a new spline-ed-nub ?

That 110/90-16 was really hard to get seated on the 550 rim. I used ratchet straps all the way around the tire and even then got lucky.

I'm going to give the 450 rim set a try and use the original brake stay hub thing . I'm sure the tire will be a lot easier to mount on the narrower 450 rim. Next time I'll go up to the 120/90-16 Avon-AM-26 tire.
If it wears the middle really quick I'll go back to the 550 rim set.

So , its back to the shop with it for round two ! Roll Eyes

Just ordered a rear wheel and new bearing for a 1983 this time ! Should be here in a week ?
