Thinking about buying a new (2019) LS650 . . .
11/25/19 at 14:46:35

The local dealer (which I despise) has a new 2019 LS650 for sale for $5000.  This means I could probably get it OTD for around $6000.  This is not a demo.  I'm seriously thinking about it.  $6000 for a new LS650 OTD seems pretty fair to me.  What think you?

I don't want to back there for the 600 mile service and would like to do the valve check/adjustment myself.  Do these bikes tend to need valve adjustment at 600 miles?  When checked at 600 miles are the 2 valves usually within specs?

I bought mine brand new, they put 2 of them together for me to choose (different colors) and did the first check up/service, but I did everything from then on.
I am not real savvy, on bikes, but this was easy....and the help you get from this site, PERFECT!
I did all the recommended stuff, raptor, versy cam chain adjuster, etc....

Yes, you can get a good cheap one, for less, but who wants to ride someone else's bike  Grin

I had no qualms about it, and back then I got it for nothing down ( I traded in a Honda Rebel in was paid for, bought it new, earlier that year)
It was a demo, and it had light damage, etc...  I wasn't happy with that bike, I got a lemon, and it was just too limited power-wise....

Suzuki was running 0 interest, and heck yeah, I took it....it was like 60 bucks a month  Grin

Go for it....you'll be proud of it, and want to keep it up....!!!

I have seen them on sale here in expensive as$ California for $5000. So polish up on your dickering skills , call around to other dealerships. I think $6k is high. You can do better. Keep us posted on your shopping. Good luck.

I was here on this forum a few months back.  I was looking at used LS605s but purchased a used 2017 DR650 instead.  I still have that bike and I like it a lot.  But I've always liked the LS650 so I'm thinking that I may as well get one and get it out of my system . . .  Wink

Suzuki builds some good bikes !   Wink

My first Savage had been idled down about as low as it could go and as a result the cam bearings had been starved .   So with my second one I've never let it get below 1000 rpm.
My second one has almost 50,000 miles on it and I couldn't be happier with it .   I did the Versey cam thing somewhere about 10,000 miles and its still on the original chain .

I believe "YouzGuyz" in Texas has a Savage that is approaching 200,000 miles  -----
So
No , don't be shy about buying a new one .... Just keep the idle up and it will seemly live  forever .   Smiley

Hey 'CAT !  that's a lot of cash for what is now an orphan bike.  Lightly used S40s can be had for half price, and you won't see any difference between new and used, except in your bank account.
I bought 2 over 3 years for that price, and I have one I can hot-rod as I choose, and a standard to fall back on when the hot-rod is on the rack.
Yes, it's your money, your choice.
Or:   RE 650 twin, new $5799!!!!!!!
Cheers! Cool

To answer your question , as long as the valves are adjusted right when you buy it , the valves will be fine, as the bike gets broken in the tips of the adjustment bolts will harden from striking the valve stems and the valve adjustment will be needed to close the gap  , .005 stock ( 1500 miles ? - the valves will have gotten louder ,but that will not do any harm) . Make sure you rotate the motor in the same direction the wheels turn ,to set it at TDC -( one of the mistakes in the Clymer book).

Yes sir!   Thanks.

A slightly noisy engine (tappet noise) is a whole lot better than a quiet engine.

Thanks.  I think I saw that in a thread in the tech section about Clymer manual errors.

I guess there may be transverse mounted engines that have the crank running "backwards".  Don't know.  But every engine I ever worked on the crank always rotated in the same direction as the wheels (when bike is moving forward).

I personally have seen leftovers, out 2 models years, one by a local dealer and another online, for new bikes just under 4k, if you took dealer financing(which they make extra money on). So I would start negotiations closer to that number. If the S40 is actually discontinued any dealer will be happy to move one off at any price above cost. Dealer cost seems somewhere in the very upper 3's.

Buying new is always a losing proposition...
You'll lose $1,000 just riding out of the parking lot...
...but hey,... somebody has to buy new.
And you do get that new bike smell.

If not for new bike buyers,... where would I find mine?...  Huh

I agree.  I've had 61 bikes in my 51 years of riding and all but a handful were bought used.

BTW, I'm not going to buy this new 2019 LS650.  I have my eye now on a used 2014 with 2500 miles for only $2500.
