The truth
12/23/19 at 12:23:42

*The problem with Harleys is the same problem with Corvettes.....*

*You spend all your life from your childhood wanting one until you can
finally (barely) afford one only to realize that everyone else has one and
you are once again indistinguishable from the masses.*

*So you spend $20k modding it only to realize that you have either made it
a giant unreliable piece of nuts, or you still have not emerged from the
mob. You drive/ride it a few times until you meet someone with more
skills/money/power so you try and keep up but just end up poking the bear.*

*You park the bike/Corvette for 15 years until the spouse nags you to sell
it... then you post an angry Craigslist ad, “No tire kickers, I know what
I’ve got, limited blah” while you ignore the fact that your vehicle is one
of 100 identical on Craigslist/Autotrader so no one comes and looks at it
except the few people willing to haggle with your underwater-ass.....*

*And it ends the way they all do.... you die and your wife sells it at an
estate sale to afford a used Jag for her new boyfriend down in Florida.*

Yup! You nailed it. And this should maybe go in the humor section, but it's related. And while of urban legend, I choose to believe it's true.

A guy sees a vintage BMW roadster listed on Craigslist for $100. Knowing it's too good to be true, he makes the call anyway. A woman answers and gives the details of a pristine vintage much-sought-after BMW roadster and confirms the price is $100.
He figures, what the heck and makes the drive. True to her word it was precisely as she described it - a pristine and very rare beauty. He asked again if in fact the price was $100. She confirmed it was.
Once he had the signed title and bill of sale in hand, he had to ask. And she said, "it was the love of my husband's life. Until he met his young secretary with whom he ran off". Once settled into their little love nest on some remote beach, he texted his wife and said, "sell the BMW and send me half the cash".

I have met a few Harley guys that ride their bikes a lot, and they have older models with very high mileage.  One of them is very hard core and can ride several thousand miles over a weekend.....another one uses the Harley as his primary transportation and his bike is loved - but well worn.

I also know of a Sportster exactly as described above - it belongs to a 66 year old married man and is parked in the garage of a "single" friends house.  The bike is extremely low mileage and is seldom ridden.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Harley and Corvette used markets as the Baby Boomer generation ages and wants to downsize.  Right now it is easy to buy nice used Japanese bikes really cheap - it may not  be long before you can be a Harley owner for really low bucks.  I wonder how Harley Davidson dealers can compete with the used bike market - but I guess that there will always be some folks with the desire to buy new.

An ex-neighbour of mine rode a Sportster that he had made into a kind of chopper. We sometimes rode together. He was full of comments about 'a real bike' and 'riceburners' etc. It was just banter but I could tell he really was trying to make himself feel better,/bigger.

One day he asked "When are you gonna upgrade to a Harley?"
I replied " I don't like Harleys, they're too mainstream".

His face was priceless. He just about went cross-eyed trying to figure out a rebuttal. None came, and the banter backed off.

IR , stand up for who you are and who your not. Ride what ever it is you like , once people know they always back off , later it turns to respect. When you get off your bike and walk alway 2 things happen , you will always glance back at your ride and then here it comes , the smile.  Cool

Have you been following me around?! Because that is exactly what happens every time I ride   Grin  And, I enjoy talking to the people who inevitably wander over to ask me about it.

Honestly, I admire all kinds of bikes, including some HDs. But, the bottom line is, I ride and work on my bike because it is a constant source of joy. It's very simple  Cool
