That price range seems completely reasonable to me. That's probably cheaper than rebuilding, especially if the case needs to be split and a crank replaced.

Do what I did, buy a complete running bike.
My Ryca smoked worse that my two stroke Puch on start up.
So I found a bobber savage on craigslist . That way I could hear it run, ride it through the gears.
I got a motor, fork legs I needed, and other parts. for $1500.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply this is my second savage the first is a 86 which is now a doner bike so I'm going to offer it here later on as a bobber project for someone to keep on the road frame and engine numbers match and she has a clean title.

Heres the upside.. Say ya grab a low buck bike,, and put the motor in yours, then you can TRY to fix the other one,,and if it looks like youre winning, you can hop it up,, and if it makes the grade, swap it into your bike,, If somethng in the bottom emd stops it from being your daily driver,, put the top end on the one youre riding,, and Bingo,, youre all set up And maybe learned a few things.. Then sell whatever ya dont wanna mess with..

I have bought several cheap engines on Craigslist when somebody started a project and gave up - but most of them are good cores and are in need of a lot of attention......often the rockers and cam are worn.  One had stripped exhaust stud holes and scored cam bearings......if you want cheap expect the engine to be unloved and have issues.

If you want a good engine that is low miles and ready to be used without needing torn apart and worked on....expect to pay $800 or more.  Shipping is also an expensive issue, as the complete motor is big and heavy!

I have a used Savage engine in fairly good mechanical shape complete with a titled frame and lots of misc bits and pieces (including a pair of $100 super cam chains) for $600 for the entire lot of stuff.  This includes a spare jug and piston that require being bored and matched.

I find that folks really need to read the list and contact the older members to get what they need at a reasonable price.   Send a PM to an older member, they have tons of stuff they collected over the years .....

Aint' it the truth!

I have somehow gathered up a lot of stuff.  The little stuff that can fit into the USPS flat rate boxes is reasonable to ship - but stuff like engines and wheels is labor intensive to pack and expensive to ship.

Somebody with a pickup truck or a trailer can make a day trip and get what they need.

I am in Fayetteville, North Carolina

Dave is in Kentucky

Lancer is in Oklahoma

Verslagen is in California

Day trip to one of them after making sure they have what you need.
