My Great Uncle Jack Just Turned 99!

Aside from my best friend that I grew up with in school, Uncle Jack is my best friend. We talk 2-3 times a week and currently in person visitation is limited due to covid, but I was able to be one of the 3 visitors allowed to be there to celebrate his 99th birthday! A true hero who just recovered from a month long battle with covid!

For you history folks, Jack served as a communications offer alongside the Navajo code talkers, and he has mementos given to him by the Navajo that I have seen and can validate the authenticity of, among other WWII relics.

Here are a few cool pictures to share. This is the bracelet that Jack was given circa 194-1944 by a Navajo (Indian) code talker he worked alongside in WWII. This was carved for Jack personally and it reflects the names of all of the campaigns that he and jack served on together. Jack said very specifically that the bracelet was carved from a piece if aluminum from a downed Japanese Zero airplane, and was carved completely by hand with the Navajo using nothing but his sheath knife. He also has an Arisaka 99 Japanese sniper rifle with the chrysanthemum stamp still intact (many were scrubbed off as a gesture of loyalty to the emperor if the rifle got captured), a matching Japanese bayonet of which the wooden handle burned off in a tank fire and Jack replaced it with plexi-glass from the canopy of a Japanese Zero...among other things. This is the stuff kids today only read about and is a dying history with these WWII vets.
