Darkside tires for beginners

Are you tired yet of putting rear tires on your bike, constantly?

Just watch it, it is another unbeliver who is getting convinced against his better judgement ......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEZeR9E3JyY

He does catch all the big points though.

The Darkside tire is still on his bike, he never crashed it although he tried seriously to do that out in the rain no less.

Yeah, it is so rare to see somebody even look at the idea I thought I would mention it.

He runs too much air pressure, BYW. he says he understands about sidewall flex and then he goes and runs it like a square edged rock hard thing anyway.

He needs to pick a narrower tire with a higher aspect number like a 90 or an 80 if such is available.

He shows a run up to 90 pounds of air to seat the bead, then does not understand how incredibly dangerous that is --- the steel bead may break at those pressures and you roll craps about getting hit with the bead as it breaks.   (as I finger the 1" scar on my left wrist and remember the 2 months I spent wondering if my hearing was ever going to get right again, that bead explosion was LOUD)

He wanted it to fail,  but it didn't.

That wheel did have the ribs that most tubeless tires have to assist the tubeless bead hold air and stay on the rim......so it had that going for it.

I think he really did have the wrong style tire - too wide and too flat of tread, and an asymmetrical tread pattern.  If he could have found a more round profile tire tread it would have been better - but maybe you can't get that style of tread in the rim size he was using.

I split this thread as it wandered away from the Darkside to the Vintage tire quest.

Off topic replies have been moved to this thread.

Darkside tires are not for the weak of heart.

My last one outlasted me as a rider -- mainly because I actually had a weak heart to begin with.

===================================================

MM, remember not to go below recommended minimum air pressure (generally 28-30 psi) as it can lead to separations and blisters in the sidewalls.

YOU KNOW THIS from your own experience having failed one in that fashion, so pick a rounded aspect tire (80 or 90 is good) and enjoy a few seasons in a row between them tire wrassling events.

Don't be surprised to see Dave split your threads up for you, I do believe he may not like Darkside as a general idea.    As Dave gets older, he acts more and more like his dad and his granddad did  (hee hee, we all do).

I find that I am not in line with the current though patterns here on the list at the moment, so I am banning myself for a while until I can get my PC back to going again .......

Self-moderation,    wonderful stuff that self-moderation.

Oldfeller:

Sorry if you are offended - I am just trying to keep the car tire "Darkside" thread that you started darkside.

The vintage looking motorcycle tires that MM was posting are not the same line of thinking as the darkside thread you posted - I thought you would be happy I was trying to keep your darkside thread on track?

Remember that I do not consider it really possible to side track or hijack a thread, if I started it is all one big long conversation and we just go with it.

And, if I do something to upset the peace, I always go away for a while until I drink enough River Styx to recover my composure and do proper penance.

And no, I do not really know what MM intended, nor do you.    We assume here MM had some firm intention in mind as He has Darksided before when he can get his hands on a reasonable tire and he, like me has NEVER worn a Darkside tire out --- they die due to road hazard or rim corrosion or other forms of mishap.

And I do note that a Guzzi is a bit of a pain to do a rear tire swap on every summer ..... so a good bit longer lasting tire might be welcome.

I'm happy ,  Wink and intend to stay that way ... Sorry if I was leading the thread astray .   Ya'll know I don't know anything about educate and the like , but never mean no harm.
...............................................

It seems to me that a long lasting tire is better than a 6K-tire any time.

I'll never be able to give the Guzzi a long lasting tire ... it needs a 130-90-17 to make the speedometer right.   The 130/80 and 120/90 are both too short .   Nothing wider is possible to put into it and the 130 has to be deflated to squeeze in.
What it is ... is ... what it is !  Roll Eyes
That is the main reason I bought the V-9 , it has a 150 /80-16 to begin with.    To bad it also had an transmission from a piece of farm equipment !  Tongue
In all fair-ness , inside a "Full Face Helmet" I couldn't hear it shifting  either , but I like open helmets in the summer .  Smiley   and smooth shifting machines all the time.     My V7-II is as smooth as most other bikes , so I know Guzzi can build a slick tranny if they try .
...................

It seems that I don't have any bikes I could put a DARK SIDE tire on anymore.    But ,  back before the Commander II , there wasn't much choice , but to try something different.

After seeing Dave's bike ride wet pavement like it was dry and trying to follow him on a Harley with a Commander II on the rear , I'm ready to admit : On wet roads those hard tires are no comparison to a well built soft sport tire.   On dry roads , I don't think it matters much as long as we're off a RACE TRACK ?

Yep, I remember you spinning that 1200 Sporster tire a little bit coming out of turns in the rain, it was fun to watch the tiny rooster tail.

But I don't ever remember spinning my rear tire in a similar fashion.   You tell me I drifted the rear some in tight corners, but I never felt that either.

I know there were times I squalled the rear tire in hard braking (intentionally mostly) but only remember doing it once completely accidentally.  But that was fairly vertical and the entire flat patch was involved.

I remember stopping on the far side of Fontana Dam once where we looked at tire feathering up the sides and mine went no further up the sides than yours did.   I had put white out on my tires that trip just to see what was what with contact patch, etc.

MM sez   "Sorry if I was leading the thread astray  ........."

You weren't, you were just having a conversation and that is what the Cafe is all about.

Right now you are having a conversation with Versy about downdraft carburetors and another one about rim sizes and you will have several more on that thread about several other subjects.

That is what drinking coffee in the Cafe is all about .......  conversations.

Splitting threads for different conversation items for one person while ignoring it for others might carry some sort of meaning ........ or not depending on how paranoid you feel this week.

I think they are all harmless conversations until the TT boys bust out into the Cafe in full cry still fussing hard with each other.

Then I remind the TT boys where they are right now and remind them each section has slightly different rules to keep it congenial and happy ( yep I wrote and rewote them until they did ).

If they don't like it, I offer to move the Tall Table over to the side, lift the trap door and go swimming with them ...... that seems to work out jest fine.

I'm used to the direction being down, makes it sound like the engine is snorting a poot when you say it "up draft" that way.
