I may be over simplifying this - but I believe cracks are caused by stress and vibration.......I am not sure the crack can move without either (although cracks can also be created by stresses resulting from large changes in temperature).

Out of curiosity - are these tank mount cracks occurring more often on bikes that have raised the front of the seat using spacers?

Someday I will be old......But not today!
