I have been thinking about this for over a week. I have not had the time to repair the gas tank bracket but have had the opportunity to think about it a great deal. What if I glue a small piece of metal or other material to the underside of the tank (to protect the tank) where the bracket broke, then set the tank back on the bracket and foam it together with great stuff or other such foam. Thinking outside the box.

I think I see where you are going here and I like it.  I think I would probably modify the bracket so that the tank could sit on in and then use a strong adhesive to keep the tank from lifting away from the bracket.  Maybe a small piece of angle iron or aluminium welded or bolted to bracket.  Something that would spread the load of the tank and offer more surface area for your adhesive.

3M VHB tape would probably work for that.  They actually use it to manufacture things like trailer walls and skyscrapers etc.  The hardest part is getting the right version of it for the job.  They probably have hundreds of variations and you might need an engineering degree to know which one to get.

Not saying it will work, but the idea seems sound.

There are several kinds of "Great Stuff"   The expanding stuff may not be strong enough .... maybe the "Semi-expanding" is tighter foam ?

On a Kawasaki KZ750 I had at one point there was a rubber cushion between the spine (frame) and the tank.   What your suggesting is about the same thing.

I believe I'd get the tank ready to go on and put a good squirt on the spine - then slip the tank on before it expanded and got hard.   Maybe a piece of saran wrap between the tank and the foam so the foam don't stick to the tank ?    Maybe a light coat of grease on the inside of the tank too (will also keep the saran wrap in place) !    That foam is really sticky and one day you might want to take the tank off again !

The hot water pipe insulation from Lowes looks like it might work ?  
If it comes in a large enough size ?

If you want to epoxy on some kind of bracing after it is welded - that likely wouldn't do any harm.  The welder fellow might also see where he could weld on a brace.  A diagonal brace could help to reinforce the area - but I am not sure what might get in the way.

Yeah, Dave has the more sensible solution. But we are doing an exercise in thinking outside the box. And rather interesting ideas we have come up with.
