Today I was riding along about 60, life was good, then POP and the engine died. Coasted to a stop, put it in neutral and it started right up! Put it in gear and it died, tried it again, same thing. AH-HA! The kickstand saftey switch! Traced the wireing and found it had rubbed against the belt and wore thru one of the wires. Dug out a pocket knife (yes I carry a WEAPON in a pouch on my bike) and cut the wires and tried it, same thing. Stripped the wires, wound them together and slid some plastic covering over the splice, tucked it out of the way and rode home like nothing ever happened.
Moral of the story, pull off your belt guard once and a while and check those wires are nowhere near the belt.
And "DON'T PANIC" and never be without your towel, or at least a rag.
