If it was my bike - the replacement petcock and a good carb cleaning would be where I would start.....along with re-jetting to a #50 pilot, #150 main, and replace the white spacer on the slide needle with 3 machine screw washers.
I am not a believer in Seafoam or other carb cleaners to remedy poor running issues - however they may be beneficial in helping to prevent problems.
You may well turn out right on the carb clean, etc. Had I not been an idiot (and in a rush) and previously replaced the petcock bolts with the correct ones after changing the plug, I'd completely agree and was thinking that way before my blunder.
But...although the petcock soon started leaking...the bike ran like a scalded dawg. Seriously. No surge. Started both cold and hot with merely a bump of the button. Smooth idle. Plenty of power. Truly amazing compared to my 10 mile test ride.
Until the very next day, when I corrected my mistake and used the proper bolts, cleaned the surface a bit, and gave the darned thing a good seal. Fixed the fuel leak, but the hard start, surge, wavering idle, et all returned immediately.
BTW I've cancelled one petcock as it wasn't expected to arrive until August. The one coming now is due sometime next week. I even looked at overnighting one but delivery is still expected in 4-5 days. Bah! I may look at doing the mod mentioned to the stock unit just to get it running.
