Yeah, I remember one of those dirt roads extra well -- I had to ditch my Savage and jump to the side to avoid an oncoming Ford truck in a single lane dirt road on a hairpin turn as I remember.

He was coming uphill, so he had no problem stopping short of my prostrate but still running bike. Still, I abandoned ship and got off the road assuming he could not stop in time ....... I was the one coming down hill and the only way I could stop the bike fast enough was to use the muffler and the side stand as gravel churning body anchors.

Since I was leading the way at the moment I certainly had nobody else to blame for the situation, but I also remember a few muted chuckles from the other Savager riders that took place at the time. In retrospect, it was kind funny.

Not as funny as MM giving everybody a free Mountain Dew spritz bath at the last bridge on the Road to Nowhere ........ That was a real classic ----- bounce, bounce, splat, FIZZZZZZZZ through the cracked cap, rotate in the air and & spew yellow sugar water everywhere.

But if we had tires made for the dirt things might change ??? Huh

Your very entertaining and I suspect you could ride a dirt bike as well as the street bike . I have a hard time picturing you without a bike ... Undecided

There's a part of me that is trying to justify getting a Himalayan ??? Roll Eyes

I like the 70 mpg , I like the skid plate , I like the styling (that upper birds-beak front fender would have to go first thing) , I like the price (new) , I don't like the 65 mph high speed cruise limit. , It is chain drive so .... any gearing is possible ? Undecided

Currently I'm thinking of keeping Kate , it does everything a person would want to do on pavement mostly ? So for now I'll have to stay on the blacktop best I can.

I can't deside which one of my current fleet to replace with the Himalayan yet . Stew you wouldn't follow me along in the dirt anyway ...

Hay Stew , lets both get Himalayans' and lead Dave to keep up . Those guys around Suches must have some REALLY GREAT dirt roads in the area ! I've never been there when there wasn't a bunch of dirt bikes getting ready for a ride into the boonies .

Its not very often we need more than 80mph anyway !

If you notice - most of the folks "rockin" dual sport bikes in Suches have hauled them on a trailer or truck......only the local folks seem to ride them in. The majority of the dual sport bikes at Suches are small 250cc bikes.....there are a few larger bikes. My Kawasaki Super Sherpa was a 250 and it was pretty much unhappy at anything over 60mph.

It seems that if you want a dual sport bike that can also do interstate, you need to get a DR650, KLR650, VStrom650, etc. They tend to be very tall in the saddle to allow good ground clearance and lots of suspension travel, and they weigh 400 pounds or more. The Suzuki Vstrom is a twin and has a bit lower stance than the rest......it is likely designed a bit more for road use than the others.

I think you would be happy with a Himalayan as you don't seem to have a lust for big HP bikes - but you may have to find a new group of friends to ride with! I am buying a Honda Trail 90 from a local fellow - but I don't think you want to go trail riding with me on that little bugger as it is likely going to be very slow!

O-yea Dave , I can picture the Honda Trail 90 being a great little machine !

My first bike was a Honda S65.
The little thing was not fast , but it was FUN !

The only time I've seen a Himalayan on the road was on the way from The Guzzi shop in Murfreesboro to Shelbyville Tn. (30 miles of back roads).

I rode the V-7 like I usually do and the Himalayan kept up ! Shocked

When we stopped at a gas station after the ride , the feller said he was running the fire out of it. Undecided

The low seat height is the big draw of the Himalayan. Those tall machines seems like a tip-over waiting to happen .
The Suzuki Van-Van would be like the Trail 90 , but I can't picture it doing 60mph for more than one downhill sprint !

I'm not even sure I'll ever have a mid-weight Dual Sport ?
But
If I do , I'd think the Trail 90 would keep-up just fine in the dirt with anything but OldFeller on a Savage ! Grin
