WTB: Dear I say, I need new springs? (Read 70 times)

Maybe Lancer will pipe-up to sell me some racing springs or not? hint Inner Spring.

In my experience, the stock springs hold up well if not overheated. Like Sneeze said, your springs are within the service limit so they are probably OK.

If you want more assurance, you can load test them. A new spring assembly (inner & outer together) exerts 55 lbs. of force at installed height of 1.3". The graph below gives you the load data for a new spring assembly.

A bathroom scale works OK. Make sure to test them with the spring retainer since it sets the installed height for the inner spring. The installed height for the inner spring is a bit shorter than the outer spring. The retainer sets that up for you. A drill press works good for compressing the spring assembly. I wouldn't settle for anything less that 50 lbs @ 1.30" (10% reduction).

One of these Proform tools is a nice addition to your tool chest. They are cheap and make the job a lot easier. A lot of folks use these along with a bench vice to test springs. Again, you are looking for 55 lbs. @ 1.30". If you want to be sure, you can check them at the full open height too. The graph I provided will tell you what they should be at the full open height for your camshaft.

Reply #6 - 12/10/21 at 09:31:58 Stay with the stock valve springs unless you like replacing the cam and rockers on a regular basis. The stiff race type springs aren't needed and the increased pressure will wear the lobes and rocker pads at a greatly accelerated rate.
